Summary: Best book for choosing curriculum This book was the best I've seen in showing all the curriculums available and really breaking it down and organizing all the information for you. NO more is the curriculum overwhelming to choose from!!! Summary: Your source for homeschooling This book is great! I love the chapter about what kind of learner your child is. Mine falls into two categories, social susan and wiggly willy. ,The chart is easy to use once you know what kind of learner you have. This book is a must if you will be homeschooling. Summary: Misleading and disappointing The title of this book should have been 100 Top Picks for Fundamentalist Christian Homeschoolers. Then I would have very little complaint since I simply wouldn't have bought the book. But the presumption seems to be that if you are a homeschooler that you are a Christian, want history told from a Christian viewpoint, don't want evolution taught and want the Bible mixed in all your studies. Even many Christians wouldn't agree with such a narrow education. If you want your child to know about prehistory and evolution, then you will have to look elsewhere for your list of curriculm, because even the non-religious selection conveniently leave out these topic. If you don't want most of the lessons mixed with Bible and Christian judgmentalism, then you will need to look elsewhere. There are no useful upper level literature selections for people not wishing their literature class mixed with religion. All the unit studies are listed as being Catholic or Protestant. Under history Genevieve Foster series is listed as non-religious and yet the best I can tell it is a religious publisher and leaves out prehistory and does not provide a true survey course in world history. In this book, I cannot find a high school level history course that I can use. I did find it useful in helping me identify a not of things I do NOT want to buy. I disagree with the authors opinions on textbooks: Textbooks do not automatically make a subject boring. I enjoyed science in high school and the broader approach of a textbook is helpful in understanding the relationship between subjects and placing the subject within a broader context. This is not a totally useless book. I did use it to make so elementary and middle school selections and like I said, it helped me avoid some Protestant or Catholic slanted choices, but I am still having to do a lot of work identify high school level materials and to make sure that my child gets a complete education instead of leaving out facts inconvenient to someone's religion. Summary: great resource We are very new to homeschooling, and I bought this book to help us sort out the vast array of homeschooling opportunities. It did not disappoint. Although some of the curricua/programs that we are investigating are not covered in Duffy's book, she helps the beginning homeschooler to methodically sort through what to look for and why - from developing a philosophy of education (what do you want out of this for your child? What are your thoughts and values on education?), developing and prioritizing specific goals, determing your learning style as well as your child's (and the significance of these), to looking at logistics such as cost, ease of instruction, how much time you have, and religious content. By the time I finished with the inital chapters and moved on to her chart of top picks, I felt much more comfortable about how to select and/or devise appropriate curriculum. Duffy is clear about her thoughts on the importance of adding religious content, but she also clearly recognizes that this may not be on every homeschooler's agenda, so I was able to read those sections with a critical eye, or merely skip over them without missing significant points. Her writing style makes the content very readable and very understandable. She provides excellent examples when they make her points easier to understand. Her step-by-step approach to figuring this all out was like having a big sister around to say, "Here, I did this before - I'll show you what works." I was very thankful for that! My only disappointment is that I wish she had included additional complete curriculum packages, as there are so many out there. However, she does acknowledge that many new homeschoolers may wish to resort to these packages until they feel comfortable planning their own - and then that's where her chart REALLY comes in handy. Summary: homeschool curriculum reviewing This book is very complete and categorized so that the types of curriculums can be found easily. |
