   Summary: So well done!
I don't quite know where to begin to review this novel. First, although I haven't read all the reviews so there may be a mention of it in one of them I missed, I was surprised that not more connections were drawn to Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story - "The Yellow Wallpaper." It is one of my favorite stories and I saw so many allusions and interesting ties to that story. I also found the novel to be slightly reminiscent of Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace - especially in terms of questions of guilt and the seduction of one character by another - though the seduction in Alias Grace is less sexually based.

The more important thing to discuss here however is that Sarah Waters is an excellent and talented writer. She brought this dark and complex story to life with such grace and subtlety. I was so impressed by her ability to bring the reader so closely into Margaret Prior's mind and experience without making her seem an extreme or unrelatable character. I found myself sympathisizing with her, worrying with her, rejoicing with her, and understanding the various emotional twists and turns she went through as if I was experiencing it for myself.
I was also so impressed with the way that she handled both Margaret's and the readers doubts or uncertainty about spiritualism and Selina's powers. Ultimately, I found Ms. Waters writing to be just as seductive as Selina.
This is the first of her books that I had read and I can't wait to read more.

Summary: Starts a bit slow but it picks up if you stick with it...
In Victorian England, a scholarly spinster with a tragic past who prefers feminine companionship becomes at the recommendation of her attending physician, a lady visitor at a women's prison. Expecting to forget her tragedy and heartbreak by doing charity work with women "more wretched than she", she comes under the spell of a spirit medium serving time for fraud and assault. Is the prisoner the real deal and an innocent woman wrongly sentenced or is she just a con-artist and seductress? Chapters alternate between the medium's diary told in flashback leading up to the events that caused her to be imprisoned and in the present of the story in the diary of the lady visitor. The twisted ending is revealed in the final 2 chapters of the book.

Loved this book, I found it a bit slow reading to start, but it does pick up. This is a must read if you like period stories. If you liked Michael Faber's "The Crimson Petal and the White", you'll like this.

   Summary: My summer read (2006)
This story is so very intriguing that I felt like I was right there in Millbank prison with Selina Dawes. Sarah Waters' description of how horrid a Victorian 'gaol' actually was is chilling and yet when you really think on it, it was probably even more terrible than that. I can only imagine what it was like to totally 'lose it' and be meanly shuffled off to 'the darks' bound in a Victorian version of the straight jacket. Also the supernatural factor of this story is amazing and one gets a taste of Peter Quick. What a great taste it is. This book is a MUST if you enjoyed The Alienist by Caleb Carr.

   Summary: One of My Favorites
I usually don't like books written in the "diary" format, but this one sucked me in and wouldn't let go. I sat down shortly after lunch to start reading, and didn't stop 'til long after bedtime. It was hard to tear myself away. It's a story that haunts you. Sarah Waters' style is lyrical, and the plot engrosses the reader almost instantly.

It's top-notch historical fiction, rich in period detail from from the dull, grim life in an English women's prison to Victorian repression, it really does come alive.

Summary: Easily One of the Five Best Books I've Ever Read!
What can you say about a novel that when you are through reading it you actually miss the characters in it because they have almost become part of your life?
Margaret and I had become old friends. We had walked those narrow prison hallways together. We had wondered about Selena and her gifts and whether she was what she said she was. And we had decided to trust her. Actually, the point had come that we had no choice but to trust her because we were no longer capable of clear thinking where she was concerned. And we mourned together when we discovered how badly we had been used. I couldn't have asked for more in a book.
The characters were likable, recognizable, and fully human. The plot was old as time itself, if a bit out of mainstream for our puritanical day and time. Some may consider this a "lesbian novel" but I consider it a human novel. Just as Brokeback Mountain is much more a human story than it is a gay story. Its theme? Honesty, pure and simple!
Sarah Waters' work should be topping the best seller lists instead of most of the tripe that sits there now.
