Professional Review:
This adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland mixes animation and live action to create a dreamlike world, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's simply a kid's film. Young Alice (Kristyna Kohoutová, spoken by Camilla Power) watches a stuffed and mounted rabbit come to life in her playroom and follows it through a magical drawer into a strange world that resembles a 19th-century toy store come to life, with a few specimens from a natural history museum thrown in. Czech animator Jan Svankmajer retains the familiar story elements but tweaks them with bizarre imagery brought to herky-jerky life with his spasmodic style of stop-motion animation. The caterpillar becomes a sock puppet with dentures, while other crazy creatures materialize as creepy skull-headed beings that bleed sawdust. Throughout the tale Svankmajer returns to punctuating close-ups of Alice's lips telling the story, just to remind us that this is a tale told. In the best surrealist tradition Svankmajer uses familiar objects in unfamiliar ways, giving a fantasy quality to the banal (and the not so banal) while tipping the dream logic to the edge of nightmare. While the imagery remains more unsettling than genuinely disturbing, younger children will certainly be happier with Disney's brightly colored animated classic Alice in Wonderland. Older children and adults will better appreciate Svankmajer's sly visual wit and unusual animation style. --Sean Axmaker

Summary: A Most Stunning Visual Treat for the Curioser and the Curioser
Most live action takes on the timeless, beautifully surreal classic Alice in Wonderland are replete with the unfortunate burden of having live actors zipped up in hokey animal suits. Said actors then act accordingly to fit their silly, hokey suits, in a result that only the most bored of pre-teens will ever find the movie any bit entertaining.
Jan Svankmajer does something I've been waiting on for eons. He takes the classic tale and turns it into a disturbing, macabre, fantastically curious adventure that's both eerie and magical. Instead of out of work, B-star actors in bunny suits with makeup slathered across their whiskered face, he utilizes the tedius, nearly forgotten art of stop-motion animation. What's more, instead of merely building a stop-motion rabbit (there IS a rabbit, but he's rather frightening in his looks and actions)or casual everyday animals, Yan brilliantly creates the most curiously bizarre creatures from random objects, giving the characters a deliciously disturbing look that when combined with the choppy, surreal movements of the stop-motion style, send chills through your soul.
The young actress who plays Alice is a delightful treat to watch as she curiously stumbles through her strange and sinister land. The overdubbing is a bit dreadful at times, but overall ads to the movies mysterious, sinister and eery quality.
I highly recommend this movie for anyone who enjoys foreign surreal cinema, or who just wants a good, creepy and beautifully bizarre adaptation of a timeless classic.

   Summary: Great Movie
From the moment the stuffed dead rabbit ripped the nails out of his paws and spit them out I was hooked. This is a hilarious movie. Even more so if it was made for kids.
The narration style get's a little annoying, but overall it's a great movie.

   Summary: yuck
I hate this movie. I saw it only once, several years ago, but parts of it are burned in my brain for all time. Someone I dated popped it in the VCR, telling me it was his favorite movie - yikes!
I understand that it is a cleverly made and conceived film - all the creatures and things in "Wonderland" can be found in Grandpa's (?) house/lab/study, so it can all be Alice's dream or imagination. But if so, what a disturbed child she is! The whole story plays out so creepily and unpleasantly, and it goes on and on. The taxidermised white rabbit alone is enough to give me nightmares, and I'm a grown-up. From the start, when he is prying his tacked down feet off his mounting, through the movie, leaking sawdust from his poorly-stitched seams... Eww.
It is a freaky and surreal movie, and I know there are people who love it, but never again for me.

   Summary: WOW!!!
It's hard for me to put into words how truly unusual and wonderful a film this is. It's quiet, nightmarish, unsettling and yet calming. One wonders if this is how a big empty house would appear to a child all alone in it. I actually prefer this to The Nightmare Before Christmas, because I don't think even Tim Burton could be capable of conjuring up such visions. He tends to keep a sense of humor in all his projects. There is no whimsy in this. Just a strange journey a girl takes through the nooks and crannys of her imagination. I would not recommend this film to small children, because it would probably scare the crap out of them. Jan Svankmajer's Alice will stick in your mind and though it is not something for the mainstream, I think that is what makes it special.
