   Summary: Needs more analysis
Overall, I am glad that I read the book. It is a part of World War II that I knew nothing about. After reading the book it is clear to me that this was a critical part of the war for the Allies. The negatives are:

1. Most of the discussion is on the weakness of the allies. This includes lack of adequate planning (e.g., trying to take the wrong hill), bad assessments of Axis strength, lack of aggressiveness especially on the part of US generals, etc. Then all of sudden , the Germans are in retreat and the Allies are at the door of Tunis. Atkinson needed to provide analysis and explain what changed.
2. There was inadequate discussion of the control of the airways. There were several references to the Luftwaffe attacking the Allied lines but then that stopped. There is practically no discussion of Allied air power and how it neutralized the Luftwaffe, gave air support to the advancing armies., etc.
3. Similar to point 1, Eisenhower is presented as an unsure, overly political, poorly prepared commander. There is little discussion about what he did, if anything, to lead the Allies to victory, although it is implied at the end. Similarly, Alexander is first introduced as the savior of the Allied effort. All future references to him only cover the battlefield mistakes. It is not clear why Atkinson introduced him in such a favorable way. I assume there were a lot of strategic and tactical skills that he brought to the effort that were left out.

Summary: An Army at Dawn: The War in Africa 1942-1943
A very large book. The text contains an over abundance of details which causes it to become a difficult read. The details are doubtless authentic but overwhelming. Best read by someone who actually participated in this action.

Summary: Army At Dawn Casts A New Light
I have read widely about WW II, but An Army At Dawn definitely filled in some of the gaps in my reading and allowed me a greater understanding of the logistic and other problems that confronted the allies at the beginning of America's entry to the Battle zones. It displays a humanism that is missing in many books on WW II and points out errors in judgment without fixing blame beyond the circumstances and inexperience. Many of the later US military decisions find their basis in the experiences related in this book. Good reading

   Summary: An Army at Dawn
This is an excellent historical account of the early days of our entry into WW2. Facts that I never knew (and I was a young person at the time) are discussed and analyzed.

   Summary: An Army at Dawn..INcredible
I recently purchased this book by Rick Atkinson as well as volume two of his triology. The book is incredible. By far the best history of the North African Campaign, in that not only do you understand the strategy, tactics, movements of armies and decisions by heads of state...but you also know what the foot soldier was experienceing, which was often terrifying, and at other times boring, but at all times focused only on the few yards in front of them or the top of the next hill. And perhaps most enlightening was the information the described how few soldiers and generals were really prepared to fight a war, and how North Africa actually taught the U.S. Soldier how to fight, and the leaders began to learn how to effectively lead.

The book read like a novel, the second volume is doing the same, and I will anxiously await the 3rd and final part that will take the reader from the D-Day invasion to the end of the War.

I give this book the highest recommendation I can give to any book I have ever read.
