Professional Review:

The bestselling parenting guide featured on "Oprah" and "Dateline" is revised and updated with new signs

For every parent or caregiver who has struggled unsuccessfully to decode baby grunts and grabs, resulting in tearful frustration for both adult and child, there is Baby Signs. Based on 20 years of research, this one-of-a-kind classic shows you how to encourage your baby's use of nonverbal gestures to enhance communication. Simple hand movements signify objects, events, and needs, so your infant can enjoy interactions with you that otherwise would have been impossible until they could talk. New features of this revised edition include helpful tips on incorporating Baby Signs into the day care setting and more than 50 additional illustrated Baby Signs.

Summary: Babies can communicate before they can talk!
Great book! We used this for my second child. She didn't seem as frustrated as my first child because she could let us know what she wanted before she could talk! I was very impressed with this book. I wasn't sure that it would work at first, but it did. She caught on. It was so fun to see her make some of the cute little signs. She could tell us when she wanted more to eat and things like that.

   Summary: Not American Sign Language
This is going to confuse teaching true ASL. Good concept. Appreciate the effort, but the signs aren't correct for future sign communication

   Summary: Signing for Babies
This book was wonderful for teaching my child baby sign language. You know it is all worth it when they start to sign back to you. I had to give the teachers at his daycare a lesson in the signs as all the kids started doing the sign for 'more' at meal times and they had no idea what the sign meant.

   Summary: Not Real Sign Language
I was really disappointed that there was no real sign language in this book. It's just made up signs that they have given meaning. If that's all I wanted, I could have done that myself. If I'm going to teach my son sign language, I want him to be able to use it to communicate with more than just myself, I want him to be able to use it with anyone who knows sign language. This book is mainly a bunch of stories about how other people use their made up signs, which is fine for sentiment, buy not good for teaching your own child real sign language.

Summary: Great research, no need to make up signs
This is a great tool for learning how and why to sign with your baby. I don't agree with making up signs though. We already have signs established in our Deaf Culture. Why not use theirs and allow it to be used later in life as well? I would recommend buying this book for the information but I bought a sign language dictionary with it, Teach Your Tot to Sign from Stacy Thompson and it has every sign that I have needed in it. It helped me so much to bring it along with me in my car and if I don't know a sign, I quickly just looked it up and my daughter learned the "real" sign for tree. Good luck and signing is a wonderful experience in our family, I hope it is in yours too.
