Professional Review:
Before Your Pregnancy is a breakthrough book for prospective parents—a completely detailed resource that prepares mothers and fathers-to-be to conceive the healthiest baby possible, to make pregnancy and delivery easier, and to foster the mental and physical well-being of their infant child. Created by two experienced health-care professionals, this unique handbook not only discusses virtually every aspect of preconception that affects a healthy baby, it tells you how to handle each one. The authors spell out what each parent needs to do, starting at least ninety days before conception (the minimum time needed for sperm to mature). The hundreds of topics covered—many for the first time in any book—include

• Men’s Health: Building healthy sperm before conception (nutrition, fitness, and medical influences)
• Women’s Health: Gynecologic well-being, preexisting medical conditions, genetic legacy, boosting fertility, becoming a mother at an older age
• Becoming an Informed Patient: Choosing a doctor, what a complete preconception exam includes, important questions and how to ask them, insurance coverage
• Nutrition: Improving the health of future generations, preconception meal makeovers, ethnic Food Guide Pyramids, avoiding food-borne illnesses, vitamin and mineral facts, pre-pregnancy body weight
• Fitness: Preconception fitness evaluation and exercise prescription, safety tips and motivational anecdotes, preconception strength and flexibility workout
• Medications/Herbs: Baby-friendly ones and ones to avoid
• Personal Readiness: Emotional, financial, and environmental issues
• Romancing the Egg: Tips for success when ready to “start trying”
Plus: Separate questionnaires for the prospective parents to fill out in preparation for their preconception medical visit.

This warm, intelligent, and completely informed reference gives aspiring parents exactly the knowledge and support they need to insure the best of everything for their child-to-be.

   Summary: Great for first timers
This book gives lots of interesting information about basic health and nutrition pre-conception. I appreciated the detail of info given especially regarding things which can affect fertility. My husband read it and found it informative from a male's point of view. One thing was that although the detail was great, we both thought it could be possible to end up becoming too obsessed with the micrograms of food consumed, as outlined in this book. Overall though it was a great read and I continue to refer to it as a general resource.

Summary: Great book for first timers!
I ordered lots of books to get me through the expectations of getting pregnant and maintaining pregnancy. We have be going through infertility treatment for a few years and we will undergo In Vitro this week. This book is fantastic!

Summary: trying to prevent another miscarriage
I have a healthy 2 1/2 year old. Since we've started trying for another , I've had 2 consecutive miscarriages. I am in the process of going from Dr. to Dr. to find out why. After reading this book , I am making connections that I hadn't previously thought about. I have learned about certain causes and can now bring these things up to my Dr.'s. I have also learned how very important diet and exercise really are!!!

Summary: more about general nutrition then preconception
This book was disappointing, it was more of a general nutrition/health book than a guide for preconception. Most of the recommendations were common sense, eat healthy, don't drink, try to be at your target weight, ect. I guess I was expecting advice I had not heard before (and this was the first book I read on the topic). However, the BMI chart was good, and there is some interesting information about vaccines.

   Summary: Wide spectrum of information
I found the book to be easy to read and motivating. It covers nutrician and specific vitamins and supplements, how much you need and what foods contain them, to using the food pyramid to make healthy changes in your diet. Also a good chapter on excercise before and during pregnancy which I found motivating. There were even a few specific excercises and illustrations to do to help strengthen muscles that will be challenged during pregnancy.

Overall I would definitely recommend this book. If you're looking for something to help you understand your cycle and when your best chances of conceiving are, read Understanding your Fertility or Dr. Shettle's How To Choose the Sex of Your Baby (even if you don't want to choose the sex or dont' believe in it!). This book doesn't give enough information to really grasp the method of charting your temperature.
