Summary: Some Clever Ideas That Must Have Fallen Under An Evil Spell I loved the original BEWITCHED TV show as a kid and was excited to hear it was coming to the big screen and disappointed when I heard most critics felt it was a dud. Nevertheless my fondness for the old series was enough to make me watch the film version and though I can't recommend the movie it is not quite as bad as I was expecting. The movie begins with some shots of LA including the Hollywood sign and the first few minutes of the film with Will Ferrel's character Jack and his agent meeting with TV executives gave me hope I was going to see a clever spoof of Los Angeles and the entertainment industry. Unfortunately the send up of the entertainment world is abandoned and the focus of the film turns back to a silly romantic comedy with the "high concept" that Nicole Kidman is a witch (Isabel) who everyone assumes is a regular mortal starring as witch-in-a-mortal-world Samantha in a BEWITCHED revival. Kidman does look a bit like Elizabeth Montgomery who played the original Samantha but I've always found her to be an annoying somewhat self-conscious actress who doesn't have the warmth and naturalness of Montgomery. Will Ferrell is OK in his part as Darren/Jack but some of the supposedly "funny" lines of dialogue he is given especially toward the end of the movie made me wince. Shirley MacLaine is totally wasted in the Endora/Iris part as is Michael Caine who plays Isabel's father. There's the start of a romance between the Caine/MacLaine characters that is dropped before the end of the film and I was a little confused as to if Iris is in actuality supposed to be a witch also? The Aunt Clara and Uncle Arthur characters are resurrected from the original series but they add very little humor or story development to the script. Isabel's two friends, her neighbor Maria and the production assistant Nina, as well as Jason Schwartzman playing Jack's agent are supposed to add some extra comedy to the film but these characterizations all fall flat as well. I'm giving the movie two stars instead of one for the classic songs that make up the soundtrack and the few glimpses we see of the original classic 60's sit-com. Someone had a clever idea for this movie but unfortunately it seemed to have fallen under a miscast spell. Summary: Cute movie plays with mixing up fictional and real worlds This 2005 adaptation of Bewitched is not simply a remake of the 1960s sitcom. Will Ferrell stars as near has-been actor Jack Wyatt, who's to play Darrin in a new Bewitched series. So as not be overshadowed by a big-name female lead, he wants to hire an unknown for the role of Samantha, and to move the focus of the show to Darrin. Nicole Kidman, meanwhile, stars as Isabel Bigelow, a real-life witch who comes to live among mortals with a view to finding true love--a commodity hard to come by in her world because of the potential for achieving instant gratification via witchcraft. Jack, needless to say, discovers Isabel--he espies her twitching her nose through a bookstore's shelves--and convinces her to take on the role of Samantha. A romance ensues, with various setbacks prompted largely by Jack's general obnoxiousness, but in the end we all leave the theater happy. As the above suggests, Bewitched the movie plays with mixing up the real and fictional worlds: Isabel and Jack are a witch and mortal who fall in love while pretending to be a witch and mortal who fall in love. But the playfulness goes farther than that. Isabel happens to have an Aunt Clara who's given to popping in for visits via the chimney, for example--a coincidence that doesn't really make sense but is, I suppose, cute. And toward the movie's end Uncle Arthur (played by Steve Carrell doing a decent impersonation of Paul Lynde) appears to Jack as a sort of warlock ex machina: its his intervention that saves the day...except that he's apparently only a hallucination. That doesn't make a lot of sense either, but it is, I suppose, cute. The perfectly charming Michael Caine stars as Isabel's perfectly charming father, Nigel Bigalow, who tries to dissuade Isabel from slumming it with the mortals, just as Endora, in the series, opposes Samantha's stay among mortals. But Nigel winds up falling himself for Iris Smythson (Shirley MacLaine), the actress who plays Endora in the series. In an interesting twist, Iris hints around that she just might be a witch herself, and we don't know for sure what her status is until much later in the movie. And the playfulness goes a little deeper yet. In the movie, Jack and Isabel are remaking the first episode of the real Bewitched series. We're shown a few black-and-white clips of Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York. The new series follows the storyline of the original first episode to an extent: the new Darrin and Sam meet by bumping into each other, just as the old Darrin and Sam did, and they go to dinner at Darrin's old girlfriend's house. What's interesting is that what happened at the dinner party in the original series is not recreated faithfully in the new episode, but it is recreated in Jack and Isabel's real life. Jack's soon-to-be ex-wife is Sheila (the name of the old Darrin's ex-girlfriend), who makes a crack to Isabel about rhinoplasty (just as Sheila did to Samantha in the old series), prompting Isabel to resort to witchcraft in response (just as Samantha did). If all this sounds a bit dizzying, well, it's not so bad when you see it acted out. The plot doesn't always stand up to logical scrutiny (why is Isabel's Samantha doll twitching its nose at her?), but the movie is fun and cute and sweet. Not a bad feel-good flick. -- Debra Hamel Summary: Funny, uplifting, very entertaining In my modest movie collection, there are very few Nicole Kidman movies because I simply don't like her personality. In Bewitched, though, she outshines everything else (except for The Hours, in which she is equally good yet different of course) she has ever done. She completely embraces and lives her character, making it a very entertaining, lighthearted and just fun to watch picture. Will Ferrell, though not in his best role, definitely puts his best foot forward within the limitations of the script and his more famous counterpart. I enjoy comedies only when they are well done. This is one of the better ones, even if it's just because of the subject and that the story is well directed. Watched it several times and I highly recommend it. For those who have given this a bad rating, hey, I have my bad days too and I have written a negative review myself even when the movie didn't quite deserve it. Hope you're having a better day today and can appreciate this witty comedy with an outstanding performance of Nicole Kidman. Summary: I don't know what all the fuss was about; I thought it was kind of funny... I will admit right off the bat that I have never seen the original television show, so maybe that alone explains why I didn't loathe this movie as so many others have. I have nothing to really base hatred off of. I actually found this film to be slightly funny and overall very entertaining. Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell work really well together. I've never really thought of Nicole Kidman as `funny' but she delivers here in a very unexpected and charming way, and while Ferrell is not his zany best he is still hilarious in scenes and worthy of mention. `Bewitched' is less a remake and more a film about a remake. That is probably the first thing that must be said about this movie. In the end it has many similarities to a remake but it is not technically a `remake'. The movie is about an actor, Jack Wyatt, on the verge of being washed up. He needs to make an impact and soon before he loses all control over his career and becomes a has-been. He has a genius idea of remaking the classic beloved television show `Bewitched' and, in an effort to draw attention to himself, he decides to cast a nobody in the lead as Samantha. This `nobody' is Isabel Bigalow who just so happens to be a witch who, much like Samantha, just wants to be a normal person. Isabel decides to take the offer but upon hearing that Jack only wanted her to make him look good she decides to get even, never imagining that she'd fall in love with him and visa-versa. Parts of the film don't work and I will say that the funniest gags in the film are stolen from some other slightly funnier movies but they still work here despite their familiarity. Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman work hard to make the dialog work and their relationship seem genuine. Kidman embraces her characters naivety as well as her impish charm and Ferrell sinks deep into his characters conceited chauvinist nature. Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine are a bit lost here. They don't have much to do and were most likely approached to add some appeal to the baby boomer crowd, which is a shame since they could have been used a little fuller in my opinion. The real gem here though is Jason Schwartzman who is just hilarious as Wyatt's agent Ritchie. He is the perfect supporting character here, adding layers of funny and delivering his lines brilliantly. From the minute he appears on screen you wish he would show up in every scene. The film is far from perfect but it's also far from a putrid waste of time as many would have you believe. Like I said though, I have never seen an episode of the beloved show and so I cannot say for sure if my opinion would be different had that not been the case. I can see how some would have expectations for a film claiming to be the remake of a classic but if you watch this, not as a remake, but as a family comedy then you can easily find yourself entertained, and in the end that's all we want right, to be entertained. Summary: Comedy Fantasy A fun movie. Predictable storyline but well acted with some good one liners and some good sight gags. There is nothing deep and meaningful in this movie so it is ideal for some light entertainment. |
