| The story of Dave Pelzer is a legend of our times: the shattering tale of the child called 'It' who was forced to live in the basement. His mother was the perpetrator of the horror, but she had a willing accomplice. It was Dave's brother Richard - the author of this book. When Dave was twelve the police removed him from the household, but the cycle of abuse continued. Mrs Pelzer had a new target for her crazed, alcoholic wrath. The hunter became the hunted - at the age of nine. This is his story. Recounting the warped dynamics of a family riven by abuse, he reveals his guilt at being the abuser, his scarring at being abused, the complete lack of questioning within the family about what was happening - and even the twisted respect the boys had for their mother. Richard became the target of his mother's artillery of insanity, the victim of savage beatings leading to hospitalization, the boy denied clean clothes, the one who 'deserved' whole bottles of hot Tabasco sauce poured down his throat. |

Summary: Touchingly Insightful I have read all of Dave Peltzer books, it was wonderful to read his brother Richards account of the abuse Dave suffered and how he came to replace Dave in his mother's Eyes. I do wish he would have not left us hanging at the end of the novel though, I was left with more questions about his life once they moved then I might have been if he would have covered things up to the point of his marriage. I hope that he will write another book enlightening us on life once they moved to Utah. I highly recommend this book to everyone who has read Dave Peltzers books, if you haven't read them first so you understand this book to the fullest that the author wants you to. Summary: INSPIRING I bought this book for my daughter who is 12. I've yet to read it. She read the original book "A Child named It" and I had never seen her read a book so quickly, she couldn't put it down. I decided to get the sequels and she read them just as quickly. It's a very sad book, but it's good for a child her age to read so that she can understand that not everyone has such a good life and I really think it makes her appreciate her life even more than before. Great book and good reading. Summary: Hope for a future I'm not sure which is better -- Dave Pelzer's story or Richard Pelzer's. Both are phenomenal. Both are testaments to the strength of our inner selves, if we only allow it to be tapped into. Both loudly proclaim that our past is not to be used as a crutch but rather a means to propel us forward. We can continue to be victims of our own choices or others' choices (i.e. abuse) or we can move forward, and not let our past define us. The Pelzer brothers have done just that -- they have used their past to propel them forward, and in the end, showing that although this torture happens, it does not crush the human spirit unless the victim allows it to crumble. It proclaims that we all can step out to make a difference in the lives of other people. We all can touch one life and this world would experience peace. May we all be different people and treat others with respect as the Pelzer's have learned to do despite their horrendous upbringing. Honestly, I don't know how they physically survived; but because they did, and because they were brave enough to tell their story, we can learn how to be compassionate and loving people. Summary: stephanie After reading the first book I was touched I didn't think that the mom would keep on going and hurt yet another of her children but the nightmare wasn't over for that family. I don't think that Richard deserved to be treated I don't think that anyone should be treated like that. I makes me wonder if any of her other children had to go threw that because if she moved on from Dave to Richard I would think that she might of done the same thing to her other kids. Summary: It's incredible to me that some folks think Dave's brother is fudging a story for his own profit! Okay, granted, he didn't suffer as much as Dave, but he still suffered horrendous abuse from this vile, disturbed woman who was his mother. Tell me, why shouldn't he be allowed to tell his own personal story? From what I have read, all those boys suffered horribly, and if they tell their stories just for the sake of enlightening people that this kind of thing does in fact exist in our nation, then that's a very brave and commendable undertaking IMHO. |
