Written on December 17, 2001 Summary: An Honest Insight to a Young Girls Life Experience This book has opened my eyes to the emotional intensity of being an adopted child. I have no friends or family that have been adopted, or adopted a child. This book was recommended by someone close to me who has worked with the author. I have to say, that I had nightmares after reading some parts of this book. The raw emotion and honesty brought forth, revealed to me the insensitivity and cruelness that this young girl had to endure. Kasey offers hope of healing in her story, I hope that others who have been in her situation can find strength and personal restoration as she has. Written on December 10, 2001 Summary: From An Adoptive Parent This book is truely eye opening! It is a great book for all member's of the adoption triad. As an adoptive parent I found the book usefull in spotting abandonment issues in my own children as a child of divorce I found it useful in spotting my own abandonment issues. Wonderfully written. A truely honest look from the prespective of an adoptee. Bravo! I have many books on adoption and would rank this among the top two I would recommend! As a matter of fact I am purchasing two more copies for family members. Written on November 13, 2001 Summary: A must read for anyone touched by relinquishment or adoption "In Whose Child? Kasey Hamner leads the reader on a courageous journey as she examines her life as an adoptee, exposing the subsequent effects on her psyche and personal relationships. Whose Child? is anything but your ordinary adoption narrative. It offers a treasure chest brimming with truths one can apply towards their own healing from relinquishment, abuse or any childhood trauma. Beautifully written, Kasey draws the reader into the emotional world of an adoptee, giving voice to the silent turmoil often encountered there and offering hope for resolution. " Written on November 7, 2001 Summary: Thank You for Opening My Eyes!!!!!! We need more adoptees like Ms. Hamner to write their stories. After reading Whose Child? (took 2 nights to read it!), I sobbed uncontrollably for 45 minutes. Ms. Hamner awakened much pain that I had been unknowingly surpressing for 34 years. In reunion myself for 10 years, I have never found an adoptee willing to truly open up and express feelings and share stories. No matter what type of adoptive home you come from, good or bad, all adoptees can relate. It's time we started doing more "relating" in order to heal. Thanks to you Kasey, I'm beginning to heal. Written on September 23, 2001 Summary: Powerful! Imagine, if you will, not knowing who gave birth to you. Then imagine growing up in a household where you felt like an alien and had a brother that sexually abused you and a mother that emotionally abused you. Then imagine finding your birth mother and father, establishing a relationship with them, and then having them reject you all over again. It's hard to imagine, huh? But this is what happened to Kasey Hamner who wrote this beautiful, sad, and bold memoir about her life. As a 35-year-old adoptee, currently 6 months into a reunion with my birthmother, I related on so many levels to Hamner's heartbreaking, and sometimes joyous, emotional experiences. While my childhood was different and my reunion experience has been different, I still share many of the fears, joys, highs and lows that she went through. I especially related to her constant fear of abandonment when it comes to men, family members as well as friends. I am also several years in recovery from drugs and alcohol and used them pretty much for the same reasons that she did...as a way to numb these fears and take me completely out of myself. I recommend this book to all members of the adoption triad (adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents). It's an emotionally powerful and insightful book which took a lot of courage to write. And her positive outlook and acceptance of "life on life's terms" is truly inspiring. I look forward to Hamner's next book (if it's not already out yet...I have to check). If I could give this book 6 stars, I would! |
