 Written on February 25, 2006 Summary: Great Thesaurus for Grade-Level Vocabulary This book is a super source for grade-level vocabulary in thesaurus format. I write curriculum materials for children, so I need to be sure my diction is grade-level appropriate. This books is a great resource to help me do this. I couldn't work without it! Written on November 24, 2005 Summary: I've Almost Worn Out My Copy This is one of the few books I use almost every day. I write books for the educational market and this is a standard reference. The organization is clean and direct. The listings are accurate and complete. My job would be much more difficult without this volume. Highly recommended for children's writers. Teachers who write their own worksheets will also find it very useful.  Written on November 20, 2005 Summary: Useful Thesaurus The beginning of this book is broken down into chapters from Kindergarten to Sixth grade and gives sample words to use at each level. But the bulk of this book (and most useful part) is a Thesaurus of sorts. It gives word choices for each grade level for each word in the Thesaurus. Overall a good book to get a general idea of the words to use with each grade level. Written on August 6, 2005 Summary: Highly Recommended Refferance Book for the Child Writer's Library At first I thought I'd been sent the wrong book, because the cover is differant from the one shown...turns out to be a differant edition, so that's okay, it just confussed me at first. Anyways, that has nothing to do with the book itself. I wasn't sure what exactly this book was gonna be, but it sounded good so I ordered it. It certainly is interesting, gives you lists of words that each grade level (Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, etc.) should know. The lists are extensive, and cover a lot more words than I had expected it to. I sometimes teach English, Writing, History, Art, and Science to various grades from 3-8, and even I was surprised to find words I wouldn't have expected on some of these lists! Well, just goes to show you can always learn something new, even when you are the teacher! Well, one thing I learned from this book, is that children's books often write at levels lower than the children are able to read, and we as writer's shouldn't be afraid to limit the words we use by feeling that the child will not understand them. Chances are they know more words than we give them credit for. I haven't had to fall back on this book for anything yet, but that's only because I am not currently working on any children's books at the moment, and I am positive that when I start my next project, I'll certainly be useing this book as one of my referances. I feel that this is a very good book and it well see a lot of use in the future. I would certainly recommend it as nessacary part of the personal libray any children's book writer.  Written on April 18, 2004 Summary: A thesaurus/dictionary? This title is exactly what it is: a thesaurus/dictionary designed for children readers. If you expect anything else from the book you will be disappointed. I was mislead by the title when I read the reviews prior to the purchase. As soon as I got the book and opened it, I realized immediately it wasn't the book that I expected. Also, the book available now appears to be a new edition. The book I am referring to must be the prior edition. Caveat emptor: no matter what book or item you opt to buy, if at all possible, go to your local store and check the item there first before committing to an order. It saves you from a headache. |
