   Summary: Works as expected
This is great piece of hardware. It's just what I've been looking at. I can connect my flat-panel iMac and start recording with no fuss at all. The manual is short but comprehensive. After all, do I really need a large discussion on how to hook up a line input device and start my recording software? I think not. The bundled software is simple to use and works just right. Of course, I can use the device with my other sound software without problems.
This device solved my problem at once. Great price and performance.
I do recommend it.

Summary: A Pretty Nice External Soundcard
The sound on my PC laptop is actually pretty good, but for recording and play on external speakers, it was less than perfect. 30 seconds after plugging in the iMic, that all changed. I don't know if it's studio quality, but for transferring cassettes to MP3 (cleaning up noise with Audacity) and getting fuller sound out of the music collection on my hard drive, it's perfect. The iMic is great buy for the price if you want better sound options for your laptop.

Summary: USB External Sound Card Lived up to expectations.
I purchased the iMic because I needed a stereo-input microphone, and my notebook computer only had a monaural microphone.

I found the iMic to be easy to install and use. It was robust (I was using it to look at electronics signals not just audio). It offered some nice features that I didn't expect (it came with the free-ware software Audacity, and had a button to select between microphone input levels and line-input levels.)

Overall, I was very happy with the iMic.

Summary: Stand and Deliver for iLine-in
If your computer doesn't have an audio input/ouput what choice do you have? Very little. You do have access to much more expensive input options at music sites. At 35 bucks this is a good option.
This produces good sound for headphones on my iBook but I don't need it for that. I use it for input. With a stereo patch cord I can record tapes using AudioHiJack or AudioX both make clear recordings. I have Audacity but it seems buggie to me. No recording software is included with iMic but they are associated with "final vinyl" freeware for which the reviews are spotted with disappointment.
My tape player runs on batteries so I don't have to worry about hum from poor grounding. If you do have hum you might want to try plugging the player into the same power bar as your computer.
I also have a Visvox stereo mic which requires phantom power. This is where the "Mic" in iMic is really screwed. No phantom or pre-amp power. That is stupid and really sucks. I can't detect any internal mic in the unit so why is it called "iMic" and not "iLine-in"? Griffin sells a stereo mic that they claim works with this but I doubt it is an audiophile job like my Visvox. Luckily I have a phantom power pre-amp for the mic which I got cheaply from Archos and is discontinued. You will spend $60 to a $120 to get one so Griffin really screwed you by not having that phantom power built-in when it would have cost nothing to use the USB power for that. Without it your input gain will be totally unsatisfactory. Hence the one star only rating.
My select switch is also backwards.
Griffin sells a "new" iMic that looks much cooler and matches the new flat panel iMac. Was it improved? Hell no! The switch is fixed whoopee! And it has a RF choke on the cable. I don't know if that makes a difference for noise on line-in recording. If you want that or the stereo Mic don't get them directly from Griffin they have a $35 dollar "handling" charge on top of shipping. Bandits!
Take a look at what else is out there. Lexicon Omega, Firepod, M-audio, Focusrite Saffire. You might still buy this because it really is a very inexpensive solution.

   Summary: It Works
No problems installing computer recognized it when I went into preferences. I just am not that familiar w/ GarageBand so it took a while to record into that program but I figured it out and then loaded the music and sermons I recorded into iTunes and from there to my iPod. Good value -- it works.
