| Julie Barenson's young husband left her two unexpected gifts before he died-a Great Dane puppy named Singer and the promise that he would always be watching over her. Now, four years have passed. Still living in the small town of Swansboro, North Carolina, twenty-nine-year-old Julie is emotionally ready to make a commitment to someone again. But who? Should it be Richard Franklin, the handsome, sophisticated engineer who treats her like a queen? Or Mike Harris, the down-to-earth nice guy who was her husband's best friend? Choosing one of them should bring her more happiness than she's had in years. Instead, Julie is soon fighting for her life in a nightmare spawned by a chilling deception and jealousy so poisonous that it has become a murderous desire.... |

Summary: Awesome storyline I have been purchasing audio books written by Nicholas Sparks and The Guardian is a truly wonderful, touching story. The characters are so realistic I felt like I was living the story with them. There were many twists and turns in the story, just enough to keep you guessing. The characters are so real, with experiences that take your breath away. And the ending was a surprise, just as is all of his novels. A wonderful writer, I can't wait for his next story. Summary: terrific in the beginning you may think that the book is one of an ordinary love story but to your suprise it is not, it is more a mix between love and thriller . the best about the book is one character, in here it is an obsessive lover that turns the book into a terrific ecxiting story. the way nicholas sparks describes and writes about him is sowhat of fanstinating that you cant lie down the book instead you get carried away thinking, what happens next. frankly, i have not read many of sparks book but the guardian is one of the best novel so far. Summary: Amazing! Great book! Keeps you on the edge of your seat at times! Hard to put down! Would definitely recommend! Summary: Sparks's first thriller... Twenty-five-year-old Julie Barenson receives a gift from her recently deceased husband: a Great Dane puppy. Along with the puppy, her husband, Jim, leaves her a note. "From wherever I am, I'll watch over you. I'll be your guardian angel." The words in that letter prophesize the occurrences that transpire years later. Julie is ready to move on, and she has to possible candidates. Richard is tall, dark and gorgeous. He is charming and attentive and wants to give her the world. Mike was Jim's best friend and has always been in love with Julie. He finally gathers enough courage to woo her. But one of the aforementioned two men is a psycho, someone twisted who wants her no matter what. But Singer, her Great Dane, is there to protect her. He growls whenever he sees Julie's dangerous admirer. Will she be able to escape from the man's unwavering obsession? I'm sure other reviewers have written spoilers that tell you who the villain is. It is not a mystery in itself, but I don't like to supply too much information in my reviews. Having said that, I'd like to add that I enjoyed The Guardian. This was Sparks's foray into writing a suspenseful thriller. But, as he explained in the Author's Note, it doesn't take the focus away from the romantic story between the protagonists. He has created a wonderful balance between suspense and his usual tear-jerking stories. And, like all the other Sparks books I've read so far, I cried at the end. I love dogs, and this particular story is very touching. I didn't know if I'd like this book as much as I enjoyed Message in a Bottle and The Choice, but I enjoyed it immensely and I recommend it. I give it four stars because, well, there aren't any surprises. The plot is kind of predictable and for a while you simply read and wait for the cops to figure out what you already know (and what's so patently obvious). The psychotic character is quite a dark one and you get into his psyche from the very beginning. I have heard stories of men like this, men who seem charming and romantic but are actually obsessive and dangerous, and I hope I never encounter anyone like that. Anyway, I look forward to reading other books by this amazing author. Summary: Typical romance thriller This is the first Nicholas Spark's book I have ever cried at the end of. ONLY for the sole fact that I cannot read any book or watch any movie where a dog dies without bawling my eyes out. The worst thing is, I knew it was coming from a mile away and was furious, almost wanting to just forget about finishing the book all together. But since I already made it that far, I figured I might as well finish it. So I, annoyingly, proceeded reading it. Stupid, I know. Even though the novel is easy to read, I was getting annoyed that it took so long to get to anything interesting, since I really didn't care about all of the Mike/Julie stuff. But again, I honestly thought there would be a real twist in the end, since it's practically MANDATORY if you have any intention of writing a suspense novel, even if you do want the thriller part to be "secondary." Over half of the book focused on the Richard stuff so I don't see how he was going to make that possible. The Richard-suspense part of the story was obviously the focal point so I don't know who Spark's was kidding when he thought the "love story" between Mike/Julie would be the central issue and the thriller stuff would be simply an "addition" to it. Which is why building Richard up as a villian from the get go and then having a totally predictable ending with no shocking twist was simply not smart. Truth be told, I dismissed the idea that Richard was the bad guy for that very reason. But then again, Sparks wanted the Richard part to be "secondary." Yeah, sure. That worked out just great. And I HATED the way Andrea was writen. Absolutely no depth whatsoever. It's like she was build up as this stupid character just so she'd be a contrasts to Julie and the perfect candidate to end up in a coma, since the readers don't care about her enough to be upset by it, but really just to excite them about the plot turn. And I did not like Mike at all, and found his "All American Good Boy" persona annoying. And a lot of his scenes with Julie were extremely cheesy. And I wanna know why after he and Julie finally got back together we never got any more glances into his point of view about the relationship, when we got so many annoying ones before then. I also didn't like Henry, the typical big bro who likes to pick on his little brother. Is there not ONE character in this book who is not a stereotype? And Mike should be dead! Hello, he got shot in the stomach and left there to bleed. But of course he miraculously lived just so he and Julie could live happily ever after. Meanwhile the dog gets poisoned and then shot two times, and HE has to meet his death just to give some stupid moral to the story about how he was the "guardian" or some reincarnation of Julie's deseased husband. I'm sorry, but killing off a dog, especially in such a terrible way, is never cool. NEVER COOL. |
