Summary: wins the tournament I am a social worker and substance abuse counselor. I have presented this book to friends and clients and used it as a teaching tool in my counseling practice. It has universal appeal, not limited to people in recovery from addictions. Summary: Excellent story of taking care of yourself, so you'll be there for others This book is a great story. The reading is probably 5th grade reading level. The symbolism is obvious, and the plot is extremely easy to follow. Yet I would recommend this to any adult or child. In today's society we can become consumed with taking care of other people. When we see disasters on TV, when our child comes home crying after being bullied, or when loved ones become ill. We can become so involved taking care of other people that we forget to take care of ourselves. Well this is a story about what happens when we forget to take care of ourselves. It tells the story of a knight who becomes so consumed with being a knight, he forgets about why he became one in the first place. Upon realizing this, he has to go on a journey and discovers the truth about his life. Summary: Not all that inspirational I picked this book up used, liking the title and the synopsis on the back. I didn't even realise it was a self help book until several days later when I caught the smaller print on the back. Oops. Considering the list of accomplishments the back of the book gives the author credit for, I was expecting it to be more humourus. However, I didn't really laugh past the first page. Though--the book clearly wasn't meant to be really funny. As far as being a self help book goes (not that I have read many, on purpose or accidently) it seemed like after the initial novelty of man in armor as metaphor for keeping oneself sheltered from the world it is pretty trite and cheesy. I don't know how useful it would really be, anyone that emotionally stunted would probably view this book as a waste of their time. As for using the Arthurian lore, it is probably a good use of Merlin. Though the presence of the king (not Arthur) seems problematic, he along with Juliet and Christopher should hve been mentioned at the end. Afterall what is the point of this journey of self discovery if it isn't proven that it did make a difference? Summary: Good Read for Men So many men (and some women, too!) should read this book. It is a simple easy-to-read book yet it will take you time to absorb the insightful information given. So many men build up this self-protective armour and end up shutting out the people they say they love. The book shines light on how, if we are willing, we can choose to walk the (challenging)path of truth and self-knowledge to shed this armour. Summary: Great Life Lessons Packaged in An Easy Read Like many men (and I'm sure women, as well), I could relate to the knight. There are times we simply fall into the trap of trying to impress the world and, the more we do this (often, unconciously), the more the "armor" builds up around us. The best metaphor of the book (in my opinion) was that the more self-knowledge attained by the knight, the more the armor melted away and his "true self" re-emerged. This book could have been a very quick read, however, I just couldn't help highlighting and taking lots of notes. I plan to review this book and its awesome lessons from time to time. Parents, please read this book . . . and pass it along to your children. |
