Summary: Excellent recording. Legendary? Not really Having been touted (branded) as legendary, this recording has drawn many classical listeners' attention. I admit that her technical superiority is intensively shown in this recording. It's clear that she plays the music with passion. But is this particular recording good enough to be glorified to this extent? Not really. I do appreciate this particular CD because it accounts for the musicality of early Martha Argerich. But I think that, in this CD, Argerich plays without much consideration. I am a fan of Argerich, and I appreciate her thundering power most of the time. But I think playing chopin needs a sense of manipulation, which allows a performer to empathize with the music and the composer. It seems that, if taking out the melody, what left, the only thing left, is her strength. I believe that her recordings under the label of DG are much better. For example, in her 1961 debute recording, the "Scherzo No.3 In C-sharp Minor, Op.39" is played with much more consideration because what she puts in the music is not only strength but also her understanding of the music. Also, I think that EMI's recording technic is not good. I can't believe my ears that the 1961 recording with DG has a much higher audio quality than this 1965 recording. Summary: Stunning, emotional virtuosity The history behind this recording alone is a reason enough for piano music fans to get it. It is really great that such a gem was not kept locked in a drawer for good! For me, Fryderyk Chopin is the greatest piano music composer there is. My music teacher used to tell me that his music, perhaps more than any other's, allows a performer to express himself/herself thoroughly. Notably, tempo changes are a characteristic feature of the Polish composer's music and make it possible for every player to feel a composition in his or her very own way. That's exactly where Martha Argerich shows her class. Yes, she is passionate and vigorous, it is her primary feature, but also her sustained and soft playing is stunningly emotional. The mazurkas included here, especially No.s 37 and 38, are a good example. Argerich's victory at 1965 Warsaw Chopin competition is also a testimony to this. The Poles have always claimed they know "their" Chopin best and they feel it when someone plays his works well. The best performance on the CD is the final movement of Sonata No.3, the Finale, teeming with glorious virtuosity. As Suvi Raj Grubb writes in what later happened to be the liner notes, it was recorded in one flawless take. Splendid. The Polonaise No.6 is highly passionate piece and played in this manner alright, although some false notes occur now and then; however, it does not matter in this case, the sheer musical power here is overwhelming. By comparison, listen to Maurizio Pollini's version recorded for DG label -- his version is more polished and in my opinion better than Argerich's. Scherzo No.3 is also played very well, but I know a better version; on a rarity CD Rachmaninov Plays Chopin (RCA Victor Gold Seal), the maestro Rachmaninov himself performs this scherzo and the contrast between low chorals and sparkling high cascades in the middle of the piece is puzzling indeed! Overall, though, this disc deserves 5 stars. Martha Argerich was in top form in June 1965 and the sound is also very good. Here, the title 'legendary recording' is no exaggeration. Summary: Excellent, engaging performances I first experienced Martha Argerich in a piano trio concert at Carnegie Hall earlier this year, and since then I have been intrigued by her work. This CD offers some amazing performances of Chopin that definitely hold the listener's attention and express the emotion and power behind Chopin's music. Though I am not a huge fan of Chopin, I definitely think this CD is an excellent introduction to his music, particularly as Argerich relates so well the power, brilliance, and majesty of his music. Summary: Stunning Performance A number of people chastise Agerich for "distoring" or "utterly destroying" the subtleties of Chopin. I can't disagree with them. However, as this virtuoso performance shows, Chopin doesn't need subtlety to be brilliant. Agerich pounds Chopin's music with great emotional intensity and rapt technical skills... it sounds like nothing else. I remain riveted by Agerich's utterly shattering interpretation of the Polonaise. For good contrast, I suggest listening to Chopin performed by Maurizio Pollini (the Polonaises CD on DG is phenomenal) and by Authur Rubenstein (who brings a stringent aristocratic Air to Chopin's music.) Summary: Spectacular I am neither a pianist nor even a musician. But when I listen to Argerich's Polonaise in A Flat (Opus 53), it rivets me every time. It's expressive, tempestuous, exhilarating. When I listen to, for example, an Ashkenazy rendition, it comes off as merely pretty, and perhaps a little plangent. The difference is that between a dark, mysterious woman with whom one falls madly in love, and Princess Diana. I don't know which version more clearly reflects Chopin's "intent." If Chopin did not intend Argerich's interpretation, he should have. This CD is worth buying just for the Polonaise in A flat. |
