Summary: There's more to good food than adding weird kinds of alcohol...
The "not your mother's" part of this book is that all the recipes involve some kind of weird liquor that you probably don't have in the house. Other than that, the recipes are fairly bland.

Nothing real special - a lot of these or very similar recipes you can get for free online

   Summary: Excellent Cook Book
I am constantly using this cook book - there are many great recipes, none of them have been a disappointment.

There are two great corn beef recipes, good recipes for pork butt and roasts, great vegetarian soup recipes, and the best recipe for posole that I've ever found.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is also an excellent resource for crock pot cooking.

I have recently become a vegetarian, but I still use this book to cook recipes for my boyfriend. The Southern Barbecued Pork on a Bun recipe is one of his favorites - I bet he could eat it every day.
I also use it to cook a variety of vegetarian dishes: Chili sin Carne, Black Bean Chili, Lucky Chili, Lentil Chili, Chickpeas with Chard, and Borscht. (To name a few!)

This is my top pick for slow cooker recipes.

Summary: Can you believe I can't put this book down???!!!
Yes, I do agree with some reviews for the most part that some of the recipes do come out bland....at first. I learned to go heavy-handed on the required ingredients, and add other complimenting ingredients from recipes that are similar to the one I'm cooking. All I can say there, folks, is taste each dish before you plug it in to cook, and then dump another handful of cilantro, or cumin, or tumeric, or lemon juice, etc., if that's what sets it off for you. But, then again, that's the cardinal rule with cooking, no? Though, I have to say the one recipe for Tuscan White Bean Soup is simply out of this world, that is...once I doctored it to my taste buds. One of the ingredients calls for 1/4 cup of olive oil, which, quite frankly, would make this soup swim in oil. I doctored it to a more healthy serving of 2 tbsp instead.....and it came out fine. It also asks for Pancetta - cured ham. Well, even in my big, sophisticated metropolitan left-coast city, Pancetta that isn't sliced razor-thin for sandwiches is hard to find....and cheap it ain't. What did I use instead? Why, a few slices of good-ol' salt-pork did the trick. The same goes for the required shallots. Well, at $3.99/lb. for shallots, you better believe I'm gonna look for something similar....and cheaper.....and, that's why I used a plain-old yellow onion.....and it came out just fine. See what I mean? I made this recipe twice: the first time I followed the recipe verbatim, and it was nothing to write home about. But, as tenacity is in my blood, I had to improve upon it by pulling from similar recipes, AND going heavy-handed on the ingredients. So, what I'm saying is that this is a great book that requires a little elbow grease. You'll be glad you put forth the effort. So, why am I giving it 4 stars instead of 5? Because it could use some pictures, and nutritional information.

   Summary: Recommended with precautions
So, it's NOT your mama's cookbook. Don't expect the cream soup dump and cook recipes here, it's not the books intent.
I for example rate this book pretty high because I LIKE cooking as much as I can in my slow cooker. I hate using the oven and especially my awful cooktop. This book has some sort of inconvenient recipes which must be done on weekends if you work all day.
Also remember that you can change the spices to your liking. Those complaining that the recipes are bland - well there is no law against adding more. You do not have to brown all your meat, either. Most of this will come out fine unbrowned. However, some of the gravy's will comeo out better if you coat the meat with flour first and either brown slightly or not. Cornstarch mixed in a little water is my fave slow cooker gravy thickening agent.
I didn't give it a 5 however, because of one serious problem I found with a recipe. Did anyone actually test the Guiness roast recipe? Combining the most bitter veggies on earth, eggplant and turnips, with Guiness beer, is an awful idea. Even the orange zest and carrots did nothing to remove the bitterness. We literally had to give this one to the dogs.
Otherwise, most everything is pretty good. I love love all the breakfast porrige recipes. Finally I can serve my husband what he likes for breakfast occasionally without having to get up super early.

I also found some of the Cajun recipes a joke, but then I'm from south La, and I find most recipes for cajun cooking from anyone other than a 4th generation cajun laughable. Not to say you can't adapt. These cajun recipes have definitely been adapted.
If you are looking for a slow cooker cookbook that does have very easy fast recipes (and not everyone of them involving cream soup), including cajun fare, try Julie Kay's Slow Cookin' in the Fast Lane.
