Professional Review:

Just when you thought it was safe to go online . . . Serge has returned!

That loveable collector of trivia, souvenirs, and murder methods is back with a new A‑Tour of Florida. And this time he's out to set the record straight!

Serge is upset that his beloved state isn't getting its proper recognition, so he signs on with the big Internet travel services. But his new employers aren't exactly sure they want to send their customers to Serge's favorite haunts—nor do they want to provide tips on how to keep from getting killed on vacation.

Serge couldn't disagree more, and he sets up his own wildcat site, hyper‑blogging his way down the coast with his perpetually hammered sidekick, Coleman.

Unfortunately Serge's Web presence catches the attention of his nemesis, Agent Mahoney, and the chase is on.

Meanwhile, professional robbery crews have begun targeting trade show exhibitors, who may or may not be what they seem. Bodies begin piling up, which is less than usual for the locale—except this time it involves rare postcards. Serge has had enough! He's forced into the only logical course of action—go shopping at the Home Depot.

And this only raises more questions:

Who is tutoring strippers through the community college?

What sparked the grudge match between coin and stamp enthusiasts?

How'd the astronaut in diapers get involved?

Why does Serge have to stop at the NASCAR superstore?

Where did all these diamonds come from? And does Lynyrd Skynyrd hold the key to everything?

It all starts with a tragic tattoo parlor mishap and soon nobody is safe, especially the person on the Robert De Niro stool, because, after all, Serge has to sit there or what's the point of life?

But wait! You say you want more? Serge says, You got it!

Guns, drugs, bloody crime scenes, historically relevant sex, library quiet time, glow‑in‑the dark deformities, hotel drink coupons, a naked woman in a shark cage, and John Travolta.

It's time to sign on with Serge and see where the twisting, sun‑splashed trail leads in . . . Nuclear Jellyfish!

   Summary: The author obviously has a loyal audience but count me out;
This is the third Dorsey/Storm opus I've tried to enjoy; they don't improve with time or effort. He has a strong audience of fans and early Amazon Vine reviewers have provided long and enthusiastic five-star eulogies. Maybe this style of would-be Carl Hiassen humor and Florida as the land of fruit and nuts will work for you. It doesn't for me. There are some threads of story, witty-weird passages and plot elements that stand out in the jungle of verbal frenzy. Some, but not enough.

The main weakness of the book is that the characters are almost uniformly as scuzzy as the story and the context. The book blurb describes Serge as "lovable," No he ain't. He's just a foul-mouthed and manic cipher. The other figures in the story are lifeless or cartoonish -- Serge's pal Coleman, for instance, who is just empty words, and agent Mahoney who is less than even that. The book is dialogue, largely foul without being interesting, and comments -- plot and character are subordinated to these. No character-development, no real narrative path. The humor is arch and mannered but seems intrusive and artificial.

Hiassen does this type of fable so much better.

   Summary: A rollicking read
You will be strongly reminded of Carl Hiaasen, Kinky Friendman, and Christopher Moore while reading this entertaining novel. Loosely plotted around a travel blog and a series of impressively creative DIY murders, Dorsey's book contains interesting snippets of Florida history and plenty of twists and turns.
The book is violent, the hero is morally complex, and most of the characters are shallow, but the story is smart and deftly written. I plan to read the rest of the series.

Summary: If you haven't read Dorsey before, a great place to start
My teenaged son Jonathan is a big Tim Dorsey fan, and dibsed the book as soon as it got here, so I let him write the review. Here it is:

This was a great book, flat out. I've loved Tim Dorsey's style since I started reading his books. I think my first was Hammerhead Ranch. All of the Serge Storms books are hilarious, and this was no exception. As usual, Dorsey sets up Serge with a random plot or harebrained idea, and then lets him take off. The wacky, sidesplitting trips through the Sunshine State leave the reader exhilirated.

Nuclear Jellyfish involves a ring of diamond couriers, a bigger ring of diamond thieves, a stripper out for vengeance, a gangster whose tattoo is the subject of many a violent debate, and of course Serge A. Storms' newest scheme to spread his Florida-mania: an Internet map-and-travel service, complete with nuggets of useful information on how to survive Florida, i.e., 'If you're staying at a budget motel that has mandatory daily maid service, they have a meth lab problem.' Johnny Vegas the Accidental Virgin and noir Agent Mahoney both put in appearances, and Coleman, as usual, tags along for Serge's insane ride. If you're a Tim Dorsey fan, I definitely recommend this book. If you haven't read his stuff before, Nuclear Jellyfish is a great place to start.

   Summary: my husband's review.....
Roger says:

"I loved this book! Serge A Storms is back and more demented than ever. It's a rare book that is so funny you have to stop and laugh out loud, but Dorsey's novel is one of those rare books. I've read all the novels featuring Dorsey's seriously warped serial killer but someone new to the series could pick up Nuclear Jellyfish and still enjoy it as a stand alone book.

Recommended. 5 stars. "

Summary: Please, Sir, May I Have Another?
Our obsessive-compulsive, undercover citizen anti-hero Serge A. Storms has launched a new career as a travel writer. In his blog, Serge's Florida Experience, he provides useful advice to travelers on how not to get mugged, scammed or otherwise screwed. Of course, Serge hates the internet, but a guy has to make a living, right? Then again, his employers won't pay him for his work. They feel he's likely to scare travelers away from Florida.

Serge is fully aware of his OCD and other mental health problems, but refuses medication. He hangs out with Coleman, a do-nothing fellow who ingests any susbstance he can find to get a buzz. The two are polar opposites, a sort of crazy Odd Couple.

A traveling salesman named Steve is recruiting his peers to moonlight as diamond couriers. No one would suspect these fellows of carrying diamonds, and of course, they're small and easy to transport. Unfortunately, the salesmen/couriers are also being robbed. A nefarious gang led by Eel, aka Jellyfish is responsible, but the police haven't made a connection.

Agent Mahoney has been released from an involuntary mental commitment. He's back to tracking down Serge. He knows Serge has killed. He Googles Serge and finds his blog and is on his tail. He finds that Serge is being followed. He wants to be the one who brings Serge down, so he warns him.

Serge and Coleman hook up with a girl named Story, whose brother was brutally attacked and robbed of the diamonds he was carrying. Of course, Story wants revenge.

The story is difficult to follow, boomeranging all over the state of Florida and back and forth between Serge and Coleman, salesmen, goons, tourists, Mahoney, Johnny Vegas, and locals. As Serge and Coleman go about inspecting and evaluating hotels for travel service material, Serge encounters a number of bad guys and their victims. As an undercover citizen, he metes out his own form of justice, in perverted and wickedly funny ways. He commits murder using polyurethane insulation foam as the weapon, for instance. It's digusting and hilarious at the same time. Because he loves his state so much, he's constantly spewing arcane Flori-trivia.

This is a bumpy, nasty, grind of a read and a wonderful escape. Dorsey turns this mess into a gut-bustingly funny story that is truly a guilty pleasure. My only regret is that I've finished the book. You should read it.
