Summary: An astonishingly good translation I've always loved the Odyssey, and have read many translations of it. But reading Fagles' translation was almost like reading it for the first time. The language was so clean and vibrant that one could imagine oneself sitting in a room, hearing it spoken by a bard. And, of course, you get an essay by Bernard Knox, whose original and thought provoking essays are always a treat. (His book, "The Oldest Dead White European Males...", in which he makes an empassioned plea for the classics, but separates himself from those that would devalue any literature outside of the standard western canon, should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the classics and their relevance to modern day life.) Summary: Good translation of a timeless classic I am inclined to agree with the reviewer who said those who probably complain about the Odyssey being a bad work of literature are too young to appreciate it. When I was in high school, I found Shakespeare pretty boring and hard to understand; it was only later in life his power and insight really became clear to me. The Odyssey is a great story, and a great classic of world literature. To assert this in my view is not imperialistic, as other cultures produced other great works of literature of equal merit, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh (ancient Mesopotamia), the Bible (Israelite civilisation), the Ramayana (India) and so on. The work's brilliance can only be summarised in its influence; which ranges from Plato to Shakespeare to James Joyce (whose finest novel is modelled on the story itself). The story revolves around the journeys of the hero Odysseus, a survivor of the tragic Trojan wars. He endures shipwreck, exile, battle with dangerous beings including cannibals and giants, and usurpers and traitors to come home and reclaim his kingdom and his wife Penelope. Many aspects of the story leave you with unforgettable images, such as the recognition of him in disguise by his old dog Argus, to the battles with arrows in his own home, and others. This edition contains a good introduction as well as scholarly notes, and is well priced. Summary: An awful book.. Now let me begin by saying I understood this book. I read it for my freshman english class, and really didn't have much trouble understanding it. That being said, I still hated this book. It was tedious, boring, and extremely conceited. I found myself not at all caring about these characters. Homer's idea for a story was a great one, but it comes out poorly. I know it's hard to argue with classics, but I just cannot explain how awful this book really is. The author doesn't get into the charcter's minds, leaving you to fill gaps in their personality. The explaination of travels and fight scenes is extremely boring and long. He does nothing to spice up the descriptions to make us interested. Many times I could turn three more pages and still be in the same spot. Frusterating expierence. Summary: The best translation of one of the best stories of all time An absolute masterpiece. If you've never read the Odyssey, read this translation. If you have read other translations, take the time to read this one anyway. You will love it. Summary: Truly Amazing Fagles's translation brings out all the pure humanity and sweeping beauty of this, the greatest of all epics. It reads like a brilliant contemporary novel, yet resonates with the timeless weight and glory of classic myth. Some have complained that Fagles' use of contemporary English idioms isn't faithful enough to the Greek texts, and they dislike the lack of footnotes or commentary (though the introduction by Bernard Knox is very insightful and illuminating on the history of the work). To those people, I say that such criticisms are largely irrelevant: this isn't intended to be a reference-text for the classical scholar. This is a common-man's Odyssey, powerful but easy to read. It deserved every bit of praise it received upon its publication in the mid-90s and will hopefully continue to be widely read for decades. |
