| Professional Review: |
| This is madness in action. Martha Argerich's Rachmaninoff Third is the fastest and most physically exciting you'll ever hear. She's recorded live, and the balances are a little strange as a result. You can also tell that Riccardo Chailly and his orchestra are having a hell of time trying to keep up with her, while anticipating what she's about to do next--but so what? This is as close as you can come to an experience of spontaneous combustion, and survive. The Tchaikovsky is, if possible, even wilder, with quite a few missed notes. But with an artist like Argerich, you simply can't judge the performance one note at a time. So go ahead: live dangerously. --David Hurwitz |

Summary: Martha Argerich: the only person who can make piano sing At first I was disappointed. Then, listening through a pair of $99 headphones, I was totally captivated, from the start. Up close listening does make a difference! I must say that, after listening to so many of Martha's recordings and reading so many reviews (even from professionals) about her, nobody has picked up one unique trait of Martha's playing against all other great piano players' (including Horowitz, whose playing is more philosophical than musical to me), namely, Martha's reading of music is holistic, or three dimensional, or whatever you want to call it. It is as if she were an architect, an architect of tonal structures. In every pieces of music she plays (esp. solos), you sense a structure. She renders every passage with a view to the whole piece. Whereas if you listen to other pianists (including Horowitz), every passage is to be contrasted only with the one before and the one after, never the whole piece. It is as if other pianists were bound by the flow of time and could not jump beyond the constraint and see the whole picture (this is what I call two dimensional). Anyway, I alway like to tell people that Martha is the only person who can make piano sing. She is the only person who can make piano weep. And she plays as if her life depends on it. Summary: Horowitz/Reiner for the Rachmaninov, but it's better than the Tchaikovsky This disc has an excellent performance of the Rachmaninov 3rd concerto, but although others have noted that the orchestra sometimes seems to need to catch up to the soloist, she has trouble consistently maintaining her tempo a bit, actually. Argerich at her best (Liszt B minor sonata) is sublime, but she has the tendency to sound disinterested as if she's "tossing off" the notes. This problem is particularly evident in the Tchaikovsky, where the pianist evidently feels so technically monumental that the piece's musicality should be dwarfed by isolated and heavily compressed displays of dispassionate bravura. You can do far worse for Rachmaninov's 3rd than this disc. Only Horowitz and Rachmaninov himself (with dreadful cuts) surpass it. (However, the more chordal and superior cadenza played by Ashkenazy with Haitink makes me want to play that version despite the awfully slow tempo and weak feeling during much of the piece.) No one plays the piece with more understanding and edge than Rachmaninov, but there is no whole recording, particularly with the longer cadenza, so the world has been robbed of a musical treasure. Summary: Undoubtedly the best Rachmaninov 3rd ever This is truly the most transcendental performance of the rach 3 ever. Right from the morose opening lines, to the hair raising electricity of the finale, Argerich simply explodes in a manner unmatched by any other pianist (Horowitz being a close second). Though the entire concerto is brilliantly played, the highlight is undoubtedly the finale.. One would run out of superlatives trying to describe this performance. As described in the CD insert, this recording is truly 'One of Nature's happenings' ! The presence of rach 3 totally overshadows an almost equally good performance of the Tchaikovsky B flat minor. However, there are several better recordings of this concerto, so I would go no further than saying that it is a good performance. I would advise Gilels for both the Tchaikovsky concertos, though. In summary, i would give 7 stars to the Rachmaninoff and 3 to the Tchaikovsky...making it 5 stars in all. However my advice to everybody is : Forget about the Tchaikovsky, buy this disc for the Rachmaninoff itself..you won't find a better one! Summary: Truly Frightening Rach 3! I love the Rach 3 (and 4) and I have essentially all of the major recordings. When the Hough complete set came out, I decided over a span of several weeks to listen to all the version I had. I will never give up my Horowitz/Coates, Horowitz/Barbirolli, or others including those by Janis, Kapell, Gutierrez, but I will always be partial to the Argerich because it was her performance that made me appreciate the work. I agree the Horowitz played it faster but Argerich rapport with Chailly with this work is incomparable. Her 1st movement cadenza is truly frightening. There is a rumor that Argerich never authorize this release and that she was actually upset when it was released. It's completely unedited. If you guys don't believe me, go to www.classicalvideorarities, buy this video on DVD and see. Yes, a video of this performance exists, and it is in excellent shape. It's a truly wonderful experience to see her play this work. The planets were aligning perfectly that night. A legendary performance! Summary: BUY THIS RECORDING Martha Argerich has been dubbed, appropriately, the "lioness" of the piano. These recordings defend her reign as the most bewildering technician and capricious romantic. These two recordings are absolutely the most amazing ever made of the Rach 3 and Tch 1. I am a pianist, and have studied both these concertos; I can say from experience that the technical prowess and the romantic, psychotic, she-devil emotion with which Argerich plays these pieces is unparalelled. With her astonishingly efficient technical approach to the keyboard, she is able to effect the most bewildering, roaring tidal waves of notes. Some criticize Argerich for playing things fast just to play them fast, but there is something special in her interpretation. Especially in these two recordings, she clings by a fingernail to her technical limitations, creating truly thrilling pianism and enhancing the extravagant romanticism of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. There is just nothing--nothing at all--that could equal this recording. It will keep you glued to the edge of your seat for its entire duration. BUY IT or regret it for the rest of your life! |
