   Summary: Mark Knopfler's best.
Another step in the evolution of a terrific guitarist into an original. Knopfler's been heading in this direction--American roots music, folk, blues, with a bit of Ireland thrown in--but he shatters his prior accomplishments with this collection. Every song--from the dirge-like Fare The Well Northumberland to the melancholy Old Pigweed--shines, demonstrating his mastery of an array of styles and an ever-improving guitar wizardry.

   Summary: UNDISTINGUISHED DOODLINGS
This is really a soundtrack so it is not an "album" in the normal sense of the word. The music is in service to the film-so the logic, which drives it, does not necessarily make it material for the popular music world. Indeed, the music may in fact serve "The Ragpicker's Dream" very well. I don't know since I cannot get my hands on a copy of the movie from the local video store.

But as music there is not much to recommend here. My brother-in-law who is a guitar freak speaks very highly of this CD; but I was disappointed. On first listen, I had the impression that Knopfler was phoning in his performance. Successive listening have dispelled that impression but as fine a craftsman Mark Knopfler is nothing on this CD matches his work with Dire Straits.

I did like "You Don't Know You're Born" and "Coyote" but over half the CD is finished before you get to these gems. Then the rest of the album sinks into the same undistinguished doodlings as the first part. Sorry, I simply can't say this is a good CD.

Summary: new music for roots lovers
If you have flirted at all with the recent roots based music phenomenon (Krauss + Union Station, T Bone Burnett, et al), take a break and buy something new and fresh but still created out of the folk tradition. This album is so acoustic you can scarcely make out the lyrics on some songs, but it is deep, textured, layered and rich in every respect. The songs are interesting throughout, Knopfler's guitar work never sounded better, and it all makes for an entirely pleasing listening experience. This album is greatly under-recognized and should have come up on the "year's best" lists. He's a treasure. We're lucky to have him. Don't hesitate to buy this. It will fill out any music lover's collection.

   Summary: The Ragpicker's Dream
I think it's fair to say that if you play a CD and love it right off the bat, you'll soon tire of it. Conversely, if it takes a while to grow on you, you appreciate it all the more.
That's what I find with Mark Knopfler's music. I had owned "Sailing to Philadelphia" for about a year before buying this album and "Golden Heart". I must say that I was a little disappointed in these new albums at first play because I had grown to love "Sailing to Philadephia" and they didn't seem to be quite as good. Since then, I've played these new albums quite a bit and they are steadily growing on me. There are nuances to Knopfler's music and lyrics that don't come over at first but grow upon you with repeated listening.
His diversity of talent and musical style probably accounts for why he doesn't get much airplay - it's hard to categorize him as one thing or another.
While Dire Straits was a great band, everyone has to grow and move on. There's nothing sadder than seeing old rockers beating out the same music they did 30 years ago - with half the energy and voice they had. I appreciate the fact that Mark Knopfler continues to search out new ways to express his creativity - which I think he has done excedingly well on this album and "Golden Heart".

Summary: Shows off the Knopfler voice
It's an exceptional collection and really like nothing else. The talent drips off of this with every tune and begs to be played over again. Folksy, ethnic, smooooth, sensual and fun.
