Summary: MENDELSOHN IS A MAVERICK, BUT DEAD ON CORRECT
Some of the most critical life-affecting decisions regarding your child occur while pregnant and during the first moments, months, and years of their lives--nutrition, breast feeding, vaccinations, etc. Too many parents blindly defer to their ObGyns & pediatricians, and are not truly informed about the choices they make. You can get the same tired establishment line about how thimerosal (mercury preservative in vaccines) doesn't cause Autism in children. But, why even inject one of the most toxic substances known to man into our children the first place?

Sure Mendelsohn is a maverick, but you owe it to yourself to know all sides of the issues regarding your children's health.

My wife's ObGyn lives a block away from us. I am a medical researcher. She dismissed my concerns and questions when my wife was pregnant, and adopted the "I'm the pro here and do what I tell you" attitude. We ignored her advice, and designed an nutritional and supplementation schedule based on scientific research.

Our baby was full-term and rated a perfect 10 on the Apgar rating at birth. Her child, born two months after ours, was born weeks premature, underweight, and very, very ill.

An M.D. isn't a license in omnipotence. You owe it to your baby to read this book to get "the other point of view."

   Summary: A bit outdated.
I think the book was probibly great in 1984 when it was published. I was a bit disappointed about how outdated it was;it suggested giving a teaspoon of Whiskey for fever to an infant. I wish that the publication date was available to view before purchasing the book and if it was, to make it easier to find.

Times sure have changed in the last 23 years. The concepts are good but I think Dr. Mendelsohn needs to update the book and re-release it.

Summary: Bought this book in 1985 ...highly recommended reading!
I happened to be thinking about when I bought and read this book back in 1985 the year my daughter was born. I can't recall everything in this book this many years later, but I do remember the impact it had on me at the time, as I even wrote to Dr Mendelsohn to thank him for writing this highly informative as well as inspiring book. I was a first time mother and wanted to give my daughter the best start. I feel this book is one every new parent or every parent in general should read and pass along. He was a visionary in retrospect I would imagine, as I was just reading about the plight of parents with children that have autism and the vaccinations..this sparked my memory of this book and how I opted out of these vaccines..and am glad I did. I remember going to one "well baby" clinic when my child was a few months old and the nurse said to me" this is one of the healthiest babies I have ever seen"!!! and she has remained so. Her own friends throughout school always asked why she was hardly ever sick...well, read the book and pay attention to your instincts.
I had a homebirth with a midwife, breastfed until she was two yrs old, did not give her any food or cereal until 6 months, and then made all of her food homemade. I slept in bed with her from the moment she was born, and for the first few years. I did not allow pressure from others to vaccinate, especially with a childs immune system at infancy being so undeveloped. I took to heart the thought of anything that is introduced directly into the bloodstream as is most vaccinations, as opposed to the way we normally contract illnesses, through the mucous membranes. I see how to this day my own child at 22 is healthy and strong and has taken antibiotics maybe a few times in her life. When I was told she had a "slight" ear infection or redness..I would get into the car and crumble up the prescription for the antibiotic... and to this day they are overused.

The bottom line to me is that we should trust in nature and see that illness is not something we have to run to doctors for and get pumped up full of drugs, but to seek out less invasive ways to comfort and treat our children..like with herbs, homeopathics, or just plain rest and lots of loving care.

I see so many children that are sick alot today and are fed poorly, have had a lot of vaccinations, and antibiotics,, cold medicnes, etc..and are "ALWAYS" sick. Many of these children didn't even get the headstart of being breastfed with natures first line of defense for a childs immunities. Let's give this doctor the respect and praise he deserves in giving us this valuable information...and honesty. Not one person knows all there is to know, but we as parents do know our own children...and need to trust that birth, feeding, and the care and wellbeing of our children is a natural process, not one made in a laboratory.

A note: when I went to enroll my daughter in school they told me she could not attend without being vaccinated...so I went and got her at I think 4 yrs old, one shot of the then DPT, but asked to leave out the P pertusis part of it, due to controversies . After the one and only series of shots I found out that if I wrote a note to school saying" due to religious convictions I do not vaccinate my child" it was all I needed for her to continue on straight through high school without.

Summary: Proof is in the Pudding
This book has been my bible for raising healthy children for the past 18 years and it has never been wrong. None of my brood has been immunized and they are the healthiest kids at school. I birth them at home, even one breech, with ease. I nurse them until them they're toddlers at least and practice what is now called "attachment parenting" that is espoused in the book. It works well and seems so much more natural than what I see more traditional, doctor-led parents go through, much nonsense of which seems to be harmful to their kids instead of good.

I think this book is timeless and still is quite relevant, maybe even more so in our current culture of fear. Parental fear is quite compelling, sometimes leading us to make the wrong choices for our children, and this book helps to keep the fears in check.

Honoring the body's ability to heal itself without the need for drugs; shunning invasive unnecessary procedures like circumcision (none of my boys are circumcised and most of their friends aren't either), ear tubes and tonsillectomies; breastfeeding and putting off solid foods until later; letting fevers run their course naturally; even mostly avoiding hospitals and doctors including well child checkups; has worked so well for us that our kids are considered a phenomenon as am I who just birthed my latest at age 46 -- at home in water.

Read this book and heed its advice. This now-deceased doctor knew what he was talking about and his wisdom is timeless, drawing on medical common sense and trusting the body to heal itself in most circumstances. The book will save you unneeded trips to the hospital and doctor and also a LOT of worry.

   Summary: Love this book!
I love this book. He gives good information so parents can use their own discretion rather than dishing out gobs of advice that may or may not be appropriate. Every parent should own this book.
