 Written on December 31, 2002 Summary: Wildly entertaining Shawn Levy gives a fascinating and compulsively readable account of the Rat Pack, along with a healthy dollop of background and "whatever happened to" information on each individual member. There are also many intriguing stories about peripheral figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Jack Kennedy (find out just how he won the election), and Sam Giancana, to name just a few. While Levy does not hesitate to point out the mistakes and faults of each man, this biography is neither sensational nor muck raking. One gets a sense that while the author is somewhat sympathetic towards his subjects (especially Peter Lawford, who was exiled by Frank Sinatra in a sad case of "shoot the messenger") he is also quite able to portray them objectively. Between the wild lives of its subjects and Levy's solid writing, this is a very enjoyable read. Written on June 25, 2002 Summary: Entertaining look at a lifestyle Wonderfully entertaining read about the Rat Pack. This book had more information about the lifestyle of the times than I thought it would. It was a fast read and highly enjoyable. What I did not expect, that was a pleasure, was the slight biographies of each entertainer that gave me a little background into each of them. And how they came to be the Rat Pack and how it became disbanded and then how each came to pass. It was excellent and I would recommend it highly. Written on May 1, 2002 Summary: Vegas baby, Vegas! This book is absolutely fantastic. It is a gritty-no-holds-barred, all inclusive story of the Rat-Pack. It includes the glamour with the grime, just as it was in real life. The prose and style are perfect. It is like you can almost hear Frank, taste Dean's drink, and smell Sammy smoking. After reading this book, I felt like I KNEW Frank, Deano, Sammy, Pete, and Joey. Although I loved Vegas before I read the book, I feel even more attached to that city of sin now. Also, when I relax listening to my Ratpack CD's, it's like I'm listening to old friends. Written on January 17, 2002 Summary: Terrible Title...Great Book Whoever titled this book ought to be shot. It sounds so inane. Nevertheless, the content is pretty darned good. A fascinating look at the Rise and long fall of Rat Pack, Levy constructs a fascinating, if not particularly deep book. The stories may be familar to many, but for someone who is not initmately familar with the Summit crew, it is a great intro. I've been a Frank guy for a long time, but now I know a bit more about the other packers. Levy is honest and straight forward. The stories about the Kennedys, the mob, the women, and oh yeah, the music are all here. The book is written in a style not unlike the boys--kind of all over the place, but it gets it right when the spotlight is on. It treats the subjects, all, with some degree with sympathy--with Peter and Sammy emerging with a great deal of sadness. A worthwhile and at times absorbing read. Levy is much less confident when he talks about the music--and is better when he deals with the stories. I enjoyed the last few chapters which deal with his analysis of the end. A well thought out thesis and about the last great American party. Well worth the 15 bucks. Written on October 11, 2001 Summary: Fabulous, baby Just a great read. I don't read much but I couldn't put this down - great combination of narrative and background stopped it seeming too documentarial and it really painted the picture of what happened and what was going on at the time. |
