   Summary: Incredible book!
Once again Nicholas Sparks writes an amazing book! This one is phenomenal. They need to make it into a movie.

   Summary: The Rescue
I couldn't put this book down when I started it. I even snuck in some reading time during the light hours at work because I was so enchanted. It surprised me that the initial rescue of the little boy was so quick, but then you realize that it wasn't him that actually needed it. Great read for anyone who loves a good story!

   Summary: Formulaic and forced
The primary value of entertainment that I received from this book was the amusement as I wondered how much more inane and contrived the dialogue between Denise and Taylor could get. The conflicts feel very forced... As when Denise is so upset when he chooses to eat at work as opposed to spending EVERY waking and sleeping moment with him. I also found some of the word choices poor "his mother looked at him with inexpressible sorrow"
?? It was clearly expressible sorrow as he could see that it was SORROW. Irrepressible sorrow would have fit with his intent better.

There was some redemption in the storyline between Taylor and Kyle. Certainly better than "True Believer" and "At First Sight" But overall, I would have been happier having not read it.

Summary: I wanted to love it.
Note right from the outset of this review: I have a child with auditory processing challenges, like Kyle in this book, so my review may not be the same as the reviewers who come from a space of "no personal knowledge of what it is like" to have a child with this special sort of "gift"... for lack of a better term.

That said - I wanted to love this book and rave about its incredibly content, magical language and moving story-line.

From the beginning, I knew I would have challenges with that and staying in a truthful place.

I found the story to be interesting but I also lost interest in a lot of the story-telling. Nicholas Sparks is a master-craftsman at story-telling, but Taylor, the romantic lead, in this story did not hold my interest at all.

Denise and Kyle fascinated me, but when the story veered off into Taylor-land I found I just didn't care. Even towards the end of the book with the big "a-ha's" and "Taylor climaxes" I just sat there almost yawning, turning the pages so I could get through with the Taylor stuff and get back to the Denise stuff.

Many of the reviewers have retold the story of Denise and her son, Kyle, and Taylor's heroic rescue of Kyle in a huge storm in a swampy, remote area by sheer willpower and intuitive leading.

What amazed me the most was Sparks' capture of Kyle's auditory processing issues. He nailed that part of the story, brilliantly - so much so I wish I had found this book years ago... then I might not have had to watch my son through such struggles at school last year and then into this year, I would have had a place to start researching.

For that, I could give this book a 5 star rating.

Unfortunately, for the story-engagement, I can't do that. Places where I normally would have found myself in a huge puddle of tears on the floor, I barely registered a tremor of interest.

I would look to either "The Guardian" or "The Notebook" for that - two of Sparks' other books.

And if you have any friends whose child has some unusual patterns of language, loan them this book. It might save them a lot of heartache.
