 Written on July 31, 2005 Summary: Alex Grey on Alex Grey I am not an enthusiast for artists writing about their own work. There seems to be something immodest about the act. Artists should let their work do the talking. However Alex Grey is such a strikingly unusual artist that any review of his "metaphysical" vision is worth considering. This book is beautifully produced with excellent quality phtographs of his major works. The text seems honest if at times a touch sentimentalised and not as instructive as the review co-authored with Ken Wilber. However, for the artwork alone I feel this volume deserves high praise and would recommend it as a useful introduction to this unusual artists very considerable visionary talent. It is a work of incredible insight, spiritual power and beauty. I have purchased several copies for close friends. My dream fantasy would be to own an Alex Grey painting. Written on January 31, 2003 Summary: An intro to Alex Grey the man and his Amazing art I like many people, became intrested in this artist after the release of Tool's latest album Lateralus, i am very glad that i did, the art that i discovered is some of the most thought provoking art that i have ever seen, He truly brings new beauty to the human body in all of its forms. The book is also filled a detailed Bio and descriptons and the stories behind the sacred mirrors as well as several other paintings by Alex in the same vein. For those looking to broaden their horizons in art, this book is an excellent choice.......... Written on December 13, 2002 Summary: Lysergic This book is hard to describe if you're not "experienced". Coming to think of it, even if you are, no one has the same "experience". What Alex Grey has done here, though, without using words, is illustrate what it can feel like to be at one with the universe. Sometimes, this can be best experienced with a partner. Those moments are fleeting, but once you've been "there", you'll understand this book. What did I just say? Oh, yeah, no words can express what he expresses here, but yet you "know" when you see it. On his website, he puts a lot of these images in liquid form, so check the book and/or the website out. Grey ably carries on the torch of Terrence McKenna and Timothy Leary. |
