Professional Review:
Secret Voyage is another kaleidoscopic musical journey through time and space, incorporating and rearranging traditional melodies from all over Europe, blending the "old" and contemporary. The brilliant guitar stylings of Ritchie Blackmore, the enchanting vocals and lyrics of singer/songwriter Candice Night and the saturation of authentic Renaissance instruments woven throughout the melodies, create a unique style of music they call Renaissance/Folk/Rock. Secret Voyage consists of twelve new tracks, recorded by Candice Night, Ritchie Blackmore and their Band Of Minstrels. This musical journey is inspired by nature and incorporates acoustic and electric guitars, strings, renaissance instruments and Candice Night s ethereal voice and mystical lyrics.

Summary: Great works by Blackmore again
I had always been a fan to Blackmore since the Rainbow days. What makes this album so extra special (to me at least..) is the song 'Rainbow Eyes'. I always thought that; this song that was originally sung by Ronnie James Dio (taken for Rainbow's album Long Live Rock On And roll)is so beautiful and haunting that I hear it over and over again during my schooldays.
In this album, Blackmore had given a new breath of life to this already beautiful song..
..a good and sturdy vocal...Blackmore's signature (spontaneous improvisation electric guitar playing style - which I consider as a bonus for this song and hope that he will do more of that on future albums)..good music arrangements..makes me listen to this song over and over again now....

How about giving a breath of life for 'Catch The Rainbow' on the next album?

great music....a must buy for Blackmore's fans out there.

   Summary: Blackmore does it again.
Ritchie Blackmore does it again. he keeps coming up with top notch music. I have loved him in Deep Purple, I have loved him in Rainbow, And I continue to love the music he's making today with Blackmore's Night. If you have any other Blackmore's Night Cd's and like them, don't think twice about getting this one, they just keep getting better! And you might also like a gal by the name of Heather Dale, A personal friend of mine. Check her out on heatherdale.com, but first buy this album, you'll be glad you did.

   Summary: A Voyage Without Surprises
There's no such thing as a bad Blackmore's Night album, so you can't go wrong purchasing this, or any of their albums. On their latest studio release, the signature Blackmore's Night Renaissance-rock fusion sound is in place, with more emphasis this time on the 'rock' part of that equation than previously. The flavor this time around leans more toward Gypsy-Mediterrean-Eastern inspired beats than the more Celtic sound on earlier tracks. There were some portions here that were very reminiscent of another favorite of mine, Loreena McKennitt. With some extended tracks here, Ritchie's guitar work really takes center stage and Candice Night is, as always, in excellent voice. Despite her fanciful stage garb, I have always found her voice to be very contemporary-sounding; her soprano is strong and true, but made for lusty belting, not fairy music. As a vocalist she is closer in spirit to Pat Benatar than the ethereal Celtic stylings of McKennitt or Connie Dover. Candice can sell a song like no one else, and above all, seems to be having such a wonderful time performing. I think Blackmore's Night is probably at their best live, and regretfully, I have never had that privilege. I have been surprised at their fresh and effective covers of contemporary folk songs I don't really care for, like "Diamonds and Rust" and "The Times They are A'Changin'", where they brought their signature sound to these iconic songs. However, their attempt to do the same with Elvis' and UB40's "Can't Help Falling in Love" is not successful and sounds just like a straight rock rendition of an already over-played song.

"Secret Voyage" boasts one of the best album covers ever, but the songs did not quite fulfill its promise for me. "God Save the Keg" sets a courtly mood that morphs into the powerful, mystical beat of "In the Crystal Ball", then some of the air goes out of the subsequent tunes. They are all very pleasant & familiar . . .but after its strong opening this album lacks an immediately memorable stand-out tune of the likes of "Fires at Midnight"; "Shadow of the Moon"; "Under a Violet Moon" or "Ghost of a Rose". With a few exceptions this effort seems to show the band veering away from its Ren-Faire persona toward a harder, modern edge, with the musical arrangements at times overshadowing Candice's vocals. In my opinion, her lyrics are not as interesting as on past records, though the beats are often crowd-pleasingly catchy. While this doesn't rank as my favorite project of theirs, but I bet they will sell it to the nines in concert.

Summary: Yet Another Great Album from BN
Secret Voyage is another Blackmore's Night album--no surprises, only pure delight. Once again the band has put together a blend of original music based on renaissance themes and great covers (best covers since "Diamonds and Rust" and "Rainbow Blues" on Ghost of a Rose). Most notable on this album are the songs "Locked Within The Crystal Ball," "Rainbow Eyes," and "Can't Help Falling in Love." I can't wait for live versions of these songs!

The album comes with the bonus video "Village Lanterne." The video may be a bit cheesy (with Candice popping out of the lake to zap the bad guys with the village lantern) but the song is one of their best.

Over all, Secret Voyage is a must have for any Blackmore's Night fan and is a great place to start for anyone looking to discover this band.

Summary: Another winner from Blackmore's Night
I was so excited to learn that BN had a new CD out, and upon listening, I wasn't disappointed. It seems to me that this album is a little more rocking than some of the others, but that's OK. There are still the beautiful instrumentals and ethereal vocals and medieval instruments that I love.

It took me a while to figure out where I had heard the first track, "God Save the Keg", before. If you've seen the movie Henry V, near the end when Henry is carrying a body across the battlefield - you know, that long tracking shot. (And I think it's the body of the cute little English teenager played by an obscure actor named Christian Bale. It's been a while since I've seen it though.)

I love their cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love". Yep, it's the Elvis song, but it's not the slow song we're used to. I'm glad they didn't try to emulate the original. That's perfect the way it is, but this version is really good, too.

So far, my other favorites are "Locked Within the Crystal Ball" and "Toast to Tomorrow", but all of them are good.
