Professional Review:

THE CLASSIC CHRONICLE OF THE BEATLES -- THEIR MUSIC, THEIR LIVES, THEIR TIMES

From their primitive first chords to the huge success of the Beatles Anthology, the Beatles have been an integral part of our culture and our consciousness for over thirty-five years. Shout! The Beatles in Their Generation tells the extraordinary story of the rise of four scruffy boys from Liverpool to beings more adored, more influential -- and in many ways more troubled --than any in the history of popular entertainment. It is also a penetrating social history of our time, based on an incredible wealth of material -- eyewitness accounts, interviews, stories withheld from the press and public -- that was available exclusively to the author.

Rich in detail, anecdotes, and background, with 100 stunning photographs, Shout! takes us from the wild, often comical days at the beginning in Liverpool to the life and death of Stu Sutcliffe, the brilliant boy known as the "fifth Beatle"; from the psychedelic triumph of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band to the band's embrace of Indian music and spirituality; from the brilliantly unified sounds of Abbey Road to Paul's desperate attempts to form a final comeback concert.

Riveting, Enlightening, Heartbreaking, Shout! Is A True Epic.

Summary: Required Text on the Syllabus for Beatles 101
If you read nothing more than this book and The Love You Make, you're pretty much set. I don't understand why Paul, probably my favorite Beatle, detests this book so much. This was the second book I ever read on the Beatles when I was sixteen years old, and when I re-read it twelve years later, having read another thirty or forty Beatles books in the interim, it only improved in my estimation. The story of The Beatles is inherently romantic and dramatic and Norman's narrative makes fantastic use of those qualities. The end of book is genuinely moving and sad. I hope Paul reconsiders his opinion. Even my private tour guide in Liverpool conceded this book's pretty much the one to read on the subject, although certainly many other wonderful books on the boys are out there. Highly, highly recommended.

   Summary: Great band, great book!
The New York Times Review is quoted on the cover as calling this Beatles narrative "The definitive biography." It's easy to see why.

Philip Norman was assigned to cover The Beatles and their company, Apple Corps. From his inside knowledge and obviously extensive research, he has created a masterful biography of the Beatles which proves to be a fascinating read.

Norman begins with the childhood of John Lennon and weaves the other members into the picture effortlessly. The book covers the lives of the Beatles before meeting, the creation of the band, their time in Hamburg, Germany, their rise to fame in both Great Britain and the U.S., and their lives as superstars right up to their breakup. Norman also has great photographs, including a fantastic collage of the Beatles' appearance during the 60s.

What makes the book so great is Norman's ability to describe the story almost as if it were a fictional novel. Each bit of sourced material is seamlessly woven with Norman's wonderfully illustrative prose. He is able to fit the documentary evidence within the context of his narrative in an artful manner.

While I am a Beatles fan and knew a lot about them already, I was surprised to find numerous aspects of them in this book which I had not known about before. I found it interesting that even though I prefer the Beatles' later music, I liked them less as people than when they had been younger--more innocent, playful, and, dare I say it, responsible.

There were several drawbacks to the book, but none were too substantial. I would have loved it if Norman had cited his sources along the way, or at least provided a bibliography list. This would have been a more scholarly approach--on the other hand, however, this IS a book about four rock stars.

I also found the book to be a little heavy with regards to Brian Epstein. Brian was certainly a close friend to the Beatles, but he gets more words about him than Ringo (perhaps George, too).

Are these negatives really important? NO! This is a marvelous book for either a Beatles fan or a novice. I think all would like it.

Summary: All about the four lads that shook the world ...
... and what a story it is. Meticulously researched and honestly told, "Shout!" doesn't gloss over the details or pretty anything up in the name of an easy read. What I love most about "Shout!" is how well it reveals the humble and very human beginnings of The Fab Four. These guys were talented, yes, and they did have a few lucky breaks, but what came out of the alchemy of their combined creative, musical knocking about was the stuff of legends -- all the more so because of what they had to overcome individually and collectively. I thought I "knew" the story of The Beatles, but I never really never knew their success wasn't really all that "overnight" after all. Norman shows them as the lovable, scrappy underdogs they were -- poised to throw the world on its collective ear -- and in the end, as surprised as anybody else when they actually arrived at the top of the charts. I always though I was probably born about 15 years too late -- this book convinced me of it. "Shout!" is the closest thing you're going to find to a time machine back to the early days of the Cavern, the Reeperbahn, and the hardscrabble days of the unassuming blokes who would go on influence unnumbered generations of musicians for years to come. Excellent book, highly recommended, and definitely *not* fluff! A must for any serious Beatles fan.

Summary: Written More As A Story than A Documentary
In my opinion, "Shout" is the best Beatles biography I have read. Norman presents an unbiased and interesting story without the usual rumors and gossip found in books written by Geoffrey Giuliano and other hacks of his ilk. Although, "Anthology" describes personal events that only the Beatles could know about, Norman has the advantage of interviewing other people for a more complete perspective.

Summary: This book is NOT for amateurs
Two things make this book a very special one.
First : you wouldn't believe how good and precise is the account of the Beatles beginnings. A good part of the book takes place before the big hit Love me do, so if you really are interested in how did it all started, this book is a must-read.
Second : this book gives A LOT of details about the managing of the Beatles, from the very beginning to the Apple corporation and to the breakup. Lot's of contracts are clearly described, numbers are showed, every businessman who came close to the Beatles has his biography in the book. Actually, the way Norman puts his energy in describing the whole management thing seems to make him forget about saying anything about the music...

If you are a longtime fan of the Beatles and know their history, you can read this book for extra details you won't find in other books. P.Norman's research is quite thorough, and will please someone who wants to know more about Brian Epstein, for example, or about Apple.

If you're looking for a really good book about the music of the Beatles, you're wasting your time with "Shout!". Your best bet would then be "The Art of the Beatles". THIS book is terrific.
