Professional Review:

Show Me How is a revolutionary reimagining of the reference genre, one part how-to guide, one part graphic art showpiece, and one part pure inspiration. In a series of 500 nearly wordless, highly informative step-by-step procedurals, readers learn how to do hundreds of useful (and fascinating and important and sometimes downright bizarre) tasks, including: Perform CPR, dance the tango, pack a suitcase, win a bar bet, play the blues, make authentic sushi rolls, fight a shark . . . and 493 more essentials of modern life. Packed with useful hands-on reference material, Show Me How is a work of art that just happens to also be an indispensable real-life resource.

   Summary: nice coffee table book
One thing that I've never been good at in all my years is figuring out how to fold a fitted bed sheet. When I'm at the laundromat, I simply do the best I can and toss them in my laundry bag. It was refreshing to actually find a Show Me How illustration showing me how.

Much of this book will not be helpful. I'm not going to be swimming with sharks, or reading flags on boats. But advice on how to take a good photograph or make colored beads can be good projects with the nieces and nephews.

Show Me How is really a lazy Sunday book, something to go through on days when you have nothing to do. The art work is really fantastic as well, and gives a lot of eye candy.

Summary: 500 Things, yes, 500 Things You SHOULD Know, not so much...
'Show Me How' is a colorful collection of picture-based steps for doing everyday things like removing stains or rolling dough, to extravagant things like riding an elephant or making crop circles.

The book is laid out in very eye-catching and easy to use format, relying almost exclusively on illustrations. The occasional text is small and incidental compared to the large illustrations and bright art design. This is the greatest strength of 'Show Me How', it literally SHOWS you how. Each item is broken down into a series of simple steps, with each step represented by a large graphic and placed in a logical order.

The tips are broken up into the following categories: Make, Eat, Drink, Style, Love, Nest, Grow, Thrive, Go, Survive and Wow. The first several chapters are full of useful information on home repair, cooking, gardening, etc. Then the book loses it's mind. Who ever needs to know how to fight an alligator? And would they have read a book about it before hand? Sure, I understand these types of things are included for fun, but I would have preferred a more useful book, with 500 things you really should know how to do.

That said the book is certainly very interesting, and when looking at it with friends this weekend, we were all inspired to create an art project featured about making vinyl record bowls. Within minutes we had each created a fairly neat looking bowl, and we found it easy to follow the steps to completion.

A fun read, if a little ambitious.

Summary: More a silly coffee/bathroom book than a useful reference guide
I was really looking forward to this book as I was expecting something along the lines of a fun reference book. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a mixed bag.

Examples of sometimes silly, but useful
Spoon without discomfort
Stencil stealthily
Carve a hollow book
Create water in the desert
Estimate remaining daylight

Waste of time:
Tie a cherry stem in my mouth
Mount a camel/elephant
Fix a flat tire with money
Pick up a rabbbit
Playing footsie
Chug from a boot
Rip a phone book in half

Not nearly detailed enough:
Create the ultimate tree house
Fold a fitted sheet
Building a loft bed
Any of the dance steps
Turning yourself into a zombie

"Shoe Me How" is a good book for the coffee table or bathroom, but it's just not detailed enough to be a good reference book. At this price range it's a neat gift. But a note to the writers/publisher: People would probably be willing to pay more for something that was more detailed and more practical.

Summary: HOW could I have NOT known this stuff???
This book is a really fun illustrated guide of how to do nearly ANYTHING you could think of. In fact, it will show you how to do things you NEVER even thought of! It has many sections filled with subjects that are serious, silly, practical and totally impractical (but fun to know anyway).
The categories include:
MAKE (how to make things, LOTS of crafts included),
EAT (preparing foods of ALL kinds),
DRINK (mostly about cocktails and BAR tricks),
STYLE (all about makeup and CLOTHING),
LOVE (romance & FLIRTY tricks),
NEST (basic repairing & creating HOMEY things),
GROW (gardening, animals & baby TIPS),
THRIVE (sports and SAFETY),
GO (travel and ADVENTURESOME things),
SURVIVE (wilderness & self-defense),
WOW (tricks & PRANKS).
So....if you want to spend a fun time looking at basic how-to's for really useful OR really crazy stuff, you will LOVE this book. It cracked up our whole family and kept us page turning for at least an hour, wondering which thing we would try first. It is the kind of book that you can look over again and again and get interesting ideas and life lessons you may or may not ever need (think, surviving in quicksand).
HOWEVER, I would insert a WARNING here: While looking it over with my younger son I skipped some parts purposely because they are aimed at more ADULT themes (or at least things you MIGHT not feel your kids should be checking out without you) such as the BREATHING FIRE (really!) & INDULGING IN A HOOKAH RITUAL (i.e. make a close proximity to a BONG).
That said, it has nearly 500 things to look at and learn from, though you will learn the very basics since it is a quick peek at most things. Do not expect this to be your HOW TO book for essential things, but DO expect it to be informative and easy to understand, most of all ENTERTAINING.
I would NOT recommend this for kids, but I don't think it was really aimed at them. It would be a great COLLEGE graduation, NEW apartment or PARENTS guide for the enjoyment factor....had they left out a few of the more dangerous/irresponsible things it might have been great for ALL ages.

   Summary: Novelty Item
This book is somewhat fun, but not particularly useful. Its subtitle is "500 Things You Should Know," but I certainly don't think all the entries fit that description. Some entries are practical, especially those dealing with clothing and household projects. Other entries are just plain silly, like how to create a chain-mail bikini.

Most of the entries are at least interesting, but some of the illustrations don't really explain adequately how to preform the necessary task. Some of the illustrations are just plain wrong; for example, on the how to shave entry, the instructions say to shave with the grain, while the illustration shows a man shaving against the grain.

The book also has a bunch of New Age mumbo jumbo with a distinctly Eastern flavor. The authors of this book strike me as the kind of "cool kids" who also write for Lonely Planet. If you fancy yourself such a cool kid (or wish you were) then you'll probably like this book.
