User Reviews:
 Rating 2   Written on June 12, 1998
Summary: Duped by the Edgar Award status
PLEASE! This won an award? Most likely due to its palatable Rainbow Coalition PC sensitive gay male worldview. My scorecard marked the following token characters: disabled gay male, Asian female journalist intern, Korean gay male, Chinese gay male, black female reporter (also tagged as the predatory heterosexual woman present in many neophyte gay male writer's novels), black gay male, lesbian athlete with child conceived by artifical insemination... I'll stop before you get dizzy. The plot - hardly original - does keep you turning the pages although I am sure most readers will figure whodunnit once they get to the introduction of Derek Brunheim, the victim's would-be lover and Daddy. The ending, in which the culprit is confronted by our intrepid hero and his token sidekick, is just laughable. The murderer breaks down and cries and the journalist/detective holds his hand while letting us in on his fantasy come true "...and for the moment he was mine." I was hoping for a true gay noir (Will one ever get published?) and instead this novel continues the mythology of the sensitive gay male in a "community" of people of all colors. It doesn't exist, I'm sorry to say.

Summary: Talented writer wins coveted award
The Mystery Writers of America was founded in 1945, and over the years it has become the most respected and influential organization of mystery writers in America. Each year it honors the best in American mystery with its Edgar Awards. And for 1997 its prestigious award for Best First Novel by an American Author went to John Morgan Wilson for "Simple Justice". Wilson adroitly combines suspenseful narrative flow with elegant poetic grace. And even though his principal character, Benjamin Justice, is a gay man, most of us can relate to Justice's flawed humanity - regardless of our own sexual orientation

   Summary: A Must READ!
Fast paced, great plot twists, keeps you up late as the mystery unfolds. Finished it in 2-days. If you enjoy a good mystery, with a gay bent (handled with sensitivity and insight by the author), put this at the top of your list--a must read

 Rating 1   Written on June 6, 1997
Summary: Heterosexuals will hate this book.
The author takes a good plot and ruins it by appealing to a gay audience. As a heterosexual I hated this book. I squirmed during the author's description of sexual acts between gay men and the leading character's homosexual thoughts. No, I wouldn't have squirmed if there was a description of sex acts between men and women and if the leading character had heterosexual thoughts about the leading female character! But not being gay, I WAS JUST TURNED OFF BY THIS BOOK! If anything, reading the book may have made me homophobic! I hope not
