Professional Review:
SWM -- Successful biographer of family; books recently categorized as "paranormal romances." Doesn't like sunbathing, garlicky dinners or religious symbols. Likes old-fashioned values; spicy Mexican dishes; warm, nice-smelling necks and plump red lips. Currently unaware he's seeking a woman to share eternity.

SWF -- Newest editor of Romance at Roundhouse Publishing. Has recently discovered a legacy author dying to be broken out. (The tall, dark, handsome writer just needs go to romance conventions and be introduced to his fans.) Dislikes "difficult, rude, obnoxious pig-headed writers." Currently unaware she's met the man of her wildest dreams.

Summary: Romance Novel with Vampire Trappings
I really like vampire novels, so I was eager to read "Single White Vampire" -- the title was so clever, I couldn't wait to see the book.

I was disappointed. This book comes out of the romance novel tradition, and while there's nothing wrong with that, it's not my thing. The book wasn't at all what I was expecting: the vampires in this novel eat food, like garlic, go to church, and can go out in the sun as long as they wear long sleeves. In other words, the vampires have been cleaned up for the conventions of the romance novel.

If that's your cup of tea, go for it, but this novel may disappoint those of us whose ideas about vampires come from the horror tradition and not the romance tradition.

For sexy and romantic vampires that DO come more from the horror tradition, try Laurell K. Hamilton.

   Summary: Fun, but definitely light
I loved the premise of this book. And it was an enjoyable read. But the writing style is simplistic and the characters lack depth, in my opinion. So, if you want a fun, fast read, this would do. But if you're looking for more, I'd say keep looking.

Summary: KN Reviews: Single White Vampire
It is generally looked down on calling a book cute, but sometimes words attach themselves to books in my mind, and I mean the term with respect. This book rings out as cute in my mind. It is funny, light, and you have the urge to strangle both main character more than half the time for be blind and or stubborn. In other words, I enjoyed it.
Kate Leever is a new editor trying to prove her worth. Lucern Argneau is a reclusive author who happens to be a vampire and is positively mortified that the family biographies he wrote are now bestselling paranormal romance novels. The two bang heads as Kate tries to get Lucern to do a book signing tour, an interview, or anything. To get rid of her he finally agrees to do a publicity act, and most of the book is set at a romance convention. Everywhere the sparks fly, heads butt, and crazy antics ensue.
Aside from comical and emotional (mostly frustration) writing, this book boasts an extremely interesting mythology behind the existence of vampires. (I am a sucker for good world building and well thought out unique mythologies)
For those who enjoy light hearted paranormals this is a well worth it read.

Summary: Entertaining fluff with some pitfalls
I have never tried a "paranormal romance" book before, so I decided I would give this one a try after a friend of mine recommended. I was not disappointed, but I wasn't "wowed" either.

Basically, Kate Leever is an editor with a publishing firm, and she is trying to get one of her writers, Lucern, who also happens to be a vampire, to do publicity tours and events to increase his books sales. Lucern wants to be left alone, but Kate is very pushy about it. Eventually, with the help of Lucern's mother, Kate manages to get Lucern to a 5 day romantic writers conference. Hilarity and sex ensue.

I think the use of nanotechnology as the causation of vampirism was a fresh take on the subject. However, whenever one tries to reinvent the genre, he/she must have a solid understanding of how they want that. Sands does an excellent job of crafting this new idea with the exception of one aspect. She does not address children. Apparently vampires can have children, but what happens then? Is there some kind of set cut-off for when the child doesn't age anymore, and doesn't that go against the whole nanotechnology idea? I have found that children seem to be the big issue with vampires and other immortal creatures. Most authors just take the easy route and say it's impossible. For those that do try to grapple with this issue, it's very difficult to figure out a plausible solution.

The sex scenes were definitely tantalizing and there were funny scenes. The characters were decently likeable (not that it really matters), but I kind of felt they were both being really stupid. Anybody who has read any form of romance knows that it all follows the same "boy meets girl-boy loses girl-boy and girl are reunited" kind of plot. I just think the "boy loses girl" part was never really that plausible. I think it was kind of forced.

Overall, it's a good read. It's fast, and it'd be perfect for a beach or a plane ride. 3.5 Stars.
