Professional Review:
The story of one of the deadliest fires in American history that took the lives of ninety-two children and three nuns at a Catholic elementary school in Chicago.

   Summary: Tragedy can teach
I live in a suburb of Chicago and was not alive when this fire occurred. I am also a teacher who practices fire drills with my school at least three times a year. Cowan and Kuenster's book is horrifying and tragic and a learning tool for states and cities everywhere in the United States unfortunately. As I read this book, I was sick to my stomach and extremely upset. This reporting made you feel as if you actually saw the event occur. I can only imagine how hard it would be to read this book if you lived through this event. But I also felt proud of the many heroes who helped in the face of this tragedy. This book does not hide the many mistakes that teachers, public officials and many others made, but it is not a story about heroes or villains. It is a teaching story. Why does the United States have fire regulations for schools (and buildings)? Why do we have fire drills? What has happened since this horrible event?
This is the story of ordinary people in ordinary times under extraordinary pressure. This fire occurred at Our Lady of the Angels parish in Chicago, Illinois in December of 1958. By the end of the fire and the aftermath, 92 children and 3 nuns and countless others had physical or psychological damage from the fire directly or indirectly. And it is important to note, that this school had fire drills and fire safety precautions. None of the people involved were bad people. Two different confessions have been attained but neither could be corroborated. To this day, the fire is listed as "undetermined cause".
While reading this tragedy, I was stunned to learn about the fire itself and what occurred immediately after. This book reminds me again of the dangerous perils of a firefighter and how these men could cope afterwards. As a reader, I felt as if I were reliving the nightmare, not just reading a reporter's account of it. As a teacher, I was reminded again of how important my job is and why we do fire drills. As a learner, I learned about one of the most horrible days in Chicago history.

   Summary: Thoughts on a coerup
I'm amazed that anyone is still writing reviews about this book.

The last reviewer mentioned how diligent the Sisters of Charity were with their remembrances of the dead way out there in California. Maybe the Californian nuns did but the nuns in Chicago didn't, just silence after the fire. I attended a Catholic high school 5 miles down the street from OLA the years after the fire .. same order of nuns, same silence. The Catholic Archdiocese in Chicago at the time dealt with the fire much the same way the Church dealt with pedophile priests ... silence. The Church at the time of the fire in Chicago was a powerful political influence ... the fire disappeared from official Chicago as rapidly as it did from the lips of the nuns. I'm guessing it's pretty much the way the Church dealt with things for centuries. I'm not sure if coverup is a good word for what they did ... is silence a better word? This was no 'too-quick modern reaction to judge' this is just the way things were. I agree with the author's assessments as well as do many others who survived this tragedy.

The book did a good job of depicting what life along Chicago Avenue was like in the late 1950's as well as reporting the fire. There are a few minor inaccuracies, but the memories of those the authors interviewed were almost 40 years old. My own memories of what happened after I jumped that day are inconsistent. I know that I saw flames shooting from a stairway landing window, that I hung from a 2nd floor window ledge and let go, and that I survived to live a life as did many others.. maybe that's enough to know.

   Summary: Minor Objection
The book is a fascinating study of a horrendous tragedy. Of that we may be sure. But its quickness to blame the church and church officials for the fire and subsequent 'cover-up" struck me as a too-quick modern reaction to far older and forgotten sensibilities. Our Lady of Angels School was conducted by the Sisters of Charity of the BVM. I attended a BVM school in California throughout the sixties. I can assure all readers that the BVMs who taught us were ceaseless in their remembrances of the dead, the circumstances of the tragedy, and how many small seemingly insignificant and separate factors can combine into a nightmarish catastrophe. It would stun me to learn that any of my fellow students were not keenly aware of the OLA fire, the "angels" and "saints" made that day, and how we had a responsibility to school and each other to PAY ATTENTION during the many, many fire drills we constantly had at our BVM school. [And this was in California where most schools are single-story and classrooms empty directly onto the playgrounds.] The BVMs were heroic in their immediate reaction to the fire (three deceased nuns, with one found dead while covering her children with her habit), and in their long-term reactions to it.

Summary: One of the best books I have read about a tragic fire.
I discovered an excerpt of To Sleep with the Angels by accident. I had barely heard of the fire this book is based on, as it occurred two years before I was born, and I have only been to Chicago once. I had to read the entire book, and I guess you could say I have become a student of tragedy-- it is sad, yes, but reading about how a tragedy brings out the best and worst in people is absorbing.
To Sleep with the Angels is heartbreaking-- not only did the fire destroy innocent lives, the neighborhood was never the same. So many lives shattered-- those whose children had lived felt survivor's guilt as well as relief. The authors describe the fire and its aftermath in detail. This book will make you go to your child's school to check on safety measures-- there was such terrible suffering, and no one has ever been prosecuted.

Summary: Great book on a terrible tragedy
This really is the only book about the Our Lady of the Angels fire (except Michele McBride's understandably bitter personal account), and it is quite well-written, fair, and reasonably complete. And extremely emotional. I can't remember ever reading a book which so saddened and touched me. I can't really add anything to what the other reviewers have said either, except that I wish the book had footnotes, sources and was a bit more in depth. I would also recommend the PBS documentary Angels Too Soon and www.olafire.com, an extremely detailed and valuable website.
