   Summary: Rice at her Worst
I love erotica, but let's speak plainly here. This is a story about the joys of rape and torture. I'm not a prude; these terms are used by the book's characters themselves. The book opens with the rape of a comatose sleeping Beauty, and deteriorates from there. There is almost no consensual sex in the book, because consent cannot be given while under duress - consent given under torture is not consent at all. The ploy used by Rice to whitewash this rape is that the rapists are generally attractive people, so the survivors of the rapes should presumably count themselves lucky. This story is about the rapist's ultimate dream - finding a victim who displays all the signs of victimhood - begging, tears, crying, shame, but who deep down begins to enjoy the rape, and love the rapist.

Clearly Rice was exploring the concept of utter surrender as a vehicle to self-realization. However, the context of submission is everything. We can easily see a noble effect of submission to a higher power, as in the case of religious submission to your god, or sublimating your own desires for the greater good of a family, a community, a nation, etc. The context is everything. We must have a viable reason for the submission to make it worthy. Rice's exploration of total surrender to another, merely for the sake of sadistic sexual gratification is vapid at best and heartbreaking at worst.

Because of Rice's talent, I finished the series, hoping for redemption; there was none. The point was made often that the "training" (abuse) Beauty is subjected to will make her a stronger, better, more capable person. But in the end, after her training is completed, she is incapable of interacting with normal people or real life, and isolates herself in her apartments, refusing to speak with anyone. Understandable, given the trauma she experienced. There is no redemption for Beauty, she is permanently scarred, and instead of rejoining the world, she ends up with an enabler, another person who will continue her abuse. However, we have seen throughout the story that Beauty's sense of self is now tied only to ever-increasing degradation and an escalation of violence. We have seen that she is like a drug addict who requires ever higher doses to get the same effect. There is no chance she will remain "happy" with her current enabler. The story ends with Beauty in the last leg of a death spiral.

   Summary: Genius
Anne Rice is a pure Genius. The Sleeping Beauty novels were elegantly written with such dramatic detail to the characters, their thoughts and their feelings. She explores the fantasy and eroticism of Domination and Submission with such grace.

Peronally I dont usually care for writing of this nature but I felt like I was in the story. I became Beauty and had her thoughs, felt her feelings.

   Summary: Most boring book ever
When a book has as its main appeal to be innovative and shocking, the worst possible disaster is to be boring.
And boring this series is. It is an endless sucession of beatings and spankings in the rear. Sleeping Beauty goes as a slave to the castle of the prince who rescued her, only to be joined by several princes and princesses who are also slaves there.
The characters have no psychological life, the dialogues are childish and there is no plot or action, besides the monotonous spanking of buttocks. If eroticism was this, soon there would be no sex in this planet.
The only emotion this book offered me is the willingness to spank Ms. Rice hard for writing such trash.
