Right after "Is it a boy or a girl?" and "What's his/her name?," the next question people invariably ask new parents is "Are you getting any sleep?" Unfortunately, the answer is usually "Not much." In fact, studies show that approximately 25% of young children experience some type of sleep problem and, as any bleary-eyed parent will attest, it is one of the most difficult challenges of parenting. Drawing on her ten years of experience in the assessment and treatment of common sleep problems in children, Dr. Jodi A. Mindell now provides tips and techniques, the answers to commonly asked questions, and case studies and quotes from parents who have successfully solved their children's sleep problems. Unlike other books on the subject, Dr. Mindell also offers practical tips on bedtime, rather than middle-of-the-night-sleep training, and shows how all members of the family can cope with the stresses associated with teaching a child to sleep. |

Summary: LIFE SAVING! New parents: read this book! Parents of toddlers who won't nap/are transitioning from a crib/resist bedtime: read this book!!! It is research-based and the methods really work. My 4.5 month old son now goes to bed wide awake at 8 PM and sleeps until morning with one feeding break around 5:30. By sleep-training your child you are restoring your sanity and doing them a huge favor as well. Summary: Perfect advice I bought this book (1997 edition) when our first daughter was 4 months old and in a reverse sleep cycle - sleeping during the day and up all night. My husband and I were working opposite shifts and at our wits end. The advice in this book was tough to swallow at first especially when you have new parents who don't know what they are doing! By the 2nd week, our daughter was back on track and sleeping through the night. Our 2nd daughter came along and I followed the program to the letter - she followed a very normal progression and was sleeping through the night at 6 weeks - even though she nursed until 10 months. Babies learn from day one. They are smart! Teach them good habits from the beginning and you will always have good sleepers. Both of our girls are still good sleepers and love their naps. This book is the BEST advice for the sanity of parents and health of children. Summary: Good Night's Sleep in 3 days Excellent book! An easy read. You don't even need to read the whole book to learn how to help your child sleep through the night. By the 3rd night, my 6 week old son went to sleep within 10 minutes, and slept 8 hours straight. By 10 weeks old, he was sleeping 10-12 hrs through the night. His sleeping pattern might not be typical of babies, but Mindell is straight forward and to the point. She even gives you insight on why your child does what he does in regards to sleep. I definitely recommend this book for any parent. Summary: At ease with my daughter My daughter is two years old and this book helped me normalize my child's behavior. My daughter is my only child so i had nothing to compare her sleeping patterns. However, after reading this book, i understand that i am doing the right thing and that she is a unique and special child. I related to several of the stories in the book and it helped me be more patient and understanding of my daughter. Thanks Dr. Jodi MIndell for writing this book. Summary: I keep going back to it... I bought this book when our daughter (who is now two years old) was about a year old. I have had to go back to it several times over the last year when she would get sick or be teething, and need some extra comfort (sleeping with me) at night. Inevitably we would get into a pattern of her sleeping with me in our guest room each night (while dad snored away downstairs) when she woke in the middle of the night. Every time I go back to it, I remember how good a book it is and how easy it is to break the pattern when you put your mind to it. I've loaned this book to members of a playgroup who have also had success with it. It gives a reasonable, rational approach to getting your child to sleep through the night, and let's face it, sometimes that involves a little crying. I also have the "No Cry Sleep Solution" which for us involved a long, drawn out approach that was not effective for our daughter in the end. I highly recommend adding this book to your bookshelf if you have a kid with sleep "issues." |
