Professional Review:
It's been three years since his fiancée's mysterious suicide, and Jace Montgomery still hungers for answers. Stacy was kind, funny, and in love -- why, on a trip to England, would she end her life in a room above a village pub? Then Jace stumbles upon a photo of a rambling estate tucked inside one of Stacy's books -- and a cryptic note dated one day before her death: "Ours again. Together forever. See you there...."

Drawing on his family's vast wealth, Jace returns to England to purchase the unsightly Priory House -- and soon discovers it is haunted by the headstrong ghost of Ann Stuart. Unraveling the ties between past and present with the help of a beautiful local journalist, Jace must at last reconcile his heartwrenching loss and his own hopeful future.

Summary: Did an editor even LOOK at this?!?!?
I've been reading Jude Devereaux for almost twenty years, and at this point, I won't buy any of her new books -I'll borrow them from the library, but I won't spend money on them. Someone To Love is a prime example of why. It starts interestingly enough, in Jude's more recent style (Someone with a tragic loss, some paranormal activity, and a mystery that entails an old house) but then it turns into an amalgam of every idea that was writtien in a plot notebook, strung together. There is no sexual tension between Jace and Nigh, heck, there's no deepening of character for either of them. They meet, and all of a sudden, they're practically living together. The plot itself gets weaker as it goes. I expected more fleshing out of the more interesting townspeople, especially the three gossippy women who ruled the town. Instead, you get a quick two page summary of what their background is. All of the people just happening to call or contact with the information they were looking for at the exact right time, and then never being heard from again was sompletely contrived and unbelieveable. Unfortunately, this seems to be the new running trend with Ms. Devereaux's works -some plot, but a lot of rushing to get you the information and run to the ending as quickly and unengagingly as possible. The throwaway conclusion with Nigh and Jace having sex for "the ghosts" to wrap everything up in as few pages as possible was a huge cheat, and not a little icky.

The worst part of this particular book is the glaring inconsistancies that any real editor would have noticed and fixed - Nigh "...humming the words to 'I Could Have Danced All Night'" (Um, you either hum the tune, or you can sing or say the words.) The fact that Nigh had over 100 stitches from her tragic Middle East episode, and yet no scars are mentioned (she wears a low cut gown, and appears naked in front of Jace later on.) and so on and so forth. I expect this of someone who is new to writing, but for someone who used to be the grande dame of researched historical novels, it really screams that she doesn't care, about her readers or her books.

After reading this and the atrocious "Always" in one week, I might not even borrow them from the library anymore. It's a real shame, since I'd rather read one good novel from every five years than lousy novels every year. Perehaps a break is in order...

Summary: Fun to read but has a lot of problems in hindsight
This is only the second book I have read by Jude Deveraux. I enjoyed reading the book - her writing style is good and fun to read. However, when all is said and done - you are left with many questions. The author brings up a lot of issues and does not deliver answers. Those answers she does deliver leave you wishing for something more or something different.

The ending is a huge let-down. You want something funny and romantic and instead, the ending is rather tacky and crude.

The writer seems to be trying to write a mystery, a romance, and a paranormal book all in one. If she had stuck to one rather than all three, the book would have been more satisfying. I am a fan of both mysteries and romances but not paranormals of any genre. I wish the trend of adding a paranormal vein would cease. I can see that the authors would think that this will expand their readership but it will
only serve to turn me away. There are too many great older books to read which are now being republished (try the Williamsburg novels by Elswyth Thane - starting with Dawn's Early Light) or which are available on the secondhand market (Elizabeth Cadell is a true delight!) The one notable exception for me are the books by Barbara Michaels (aka Elizabeth Peters of the Amelia Peabody mysteries). I have always enjoyed her Barbara Michaels books with their very light paranormal touches.

I will read other books by Ms. Deveraux - probably purchased as remainders or second-hand but I will steer clear of any of her books which are ghost related.

Summary: One of Jude Deveraux's misses
I have read a number of Jude Deveraux's books and some are hits (A Knight In Shining Armor, Sweet Liar) and others are misses. This one is a definite miss!
I agree with other reviewers when they say the plot had potential, but it was never developed. The characters were never developed and the romance between Jace and Nigh left me cold. The paranormal/ghost story was never developed enough either - we never got to get into the ghost's characters, to meet them and like (or hate) them. It's like half the book was left behind in the editing.
Save your money and use your local library if they get this one in their collection. I know I want my $7.99 plus tax back.

   Summary: Someone to Love
This book is a want to be mystery. It is one of her worst yet, but that seems to be the norm with her last few. Big disappointment.
