It was her father's dying wish that Samantha Elliot search for her grandmother, who'd disappeared from Louisville when she was a baby. So here she was, in big, dirty New York City...her parents were dead, her divorce was final, and she was all alone.... Michael Taggert was Samantha's landlord, and he was easily the most beautiful man she'd ever seen. He was charming, too -- his zest for life was so contagious that in his presence Sam bloomed like a flower after the rain. Yet Mike could only get so far with her -- when he tried to get closer, it was like running into a brick wall. But Mike wouldn't give up. As they probed her grandmother's past, he was slowly uncovering the joy and affection Samantha had buried long ago -- and leading them closer to the dangerous truth about a bloody spring night in 1928, and a seductive blues singer named Maxie.... |

Summary: Sweet novel! I have begun to think that Jude Deveraux isn't capable of writing a bad novel. Well, I've only read four of them so far, but they have all been winners and quite unique, not in the slightest bit repetitious. Sweet Liar is one of the best romances I've read. The heroine has a wounded soul and finds a sweet, hot, sexy hero to mend it. Samantha Elliot's father wants her to find out what happened to his mother. It is the condition in his will that says she will not have his money until she lives in New York City for one year and finds her wayward grandmother. A country bumpkin from Kentucky, she is terrified of New York, and decides she dislikes Michael Taggert, her gorgeous landlord, after her initial attraction to him. Samantha has years of pent-up sadness, frustration and anger inside her, and Michael does whatever possible to encourage her to find her grandmother and get to the bottom of her inner demons, all the while trying to get her into his bed... and into her heart. There are many twists throughout the novel. This novel wowed me from beginning to end. I enjoyed this beautiful love story so much and I adored Michael, not only because he is gorgeous, but also because he is kind and loving. The back story centered on Samantha's grandmother -- the things that happened to her -- is compelling and enthralling, a definite page-turner. I love the romance, the backdrop of New York City seen through the eyes of a country woman, and this amazing story that has a subplot centered on mobsters and the roaring 1920s (Sam's grandmother's era). I couldn't keep this book down and couldn't wait to see the conclusion to this suspenseful subplot. The one disappointing thing is that the whole recreation act of what had transpired on that night in 1928 is too unrealistic and wraps up a little too neatly for my taste. But that didn't interfere with my overall enjoyment with this novel. The characters are awesome. I love the protagonists and the secondary characters, especially Kane, Michael's twin brother. I look forward to reading his story in The Invitation. The get-together between the Taggerts and the Montgomerys is such a fun scene. I noticed that there are characters and back stories taken from other novels that I haven't read. I only recognized Dougless and Reed from A Knight in Shining Armor. I so look forward to reading every book by these families. Sweet Liar is one memorable romance. It is almost as memorable and poignant as A Knight in Shining Armor, my favorite Deveraux novel so far. This author has filled up my TBR pile and I look forward to more hours reading her wonderful books. In the meantime, I cannot recommend this gem enough. Summary: Sweet! Sweet! Sweet Romance! The hero is the sweetest! i loved this romance. One of the best I have ever read. Jude's romances are so fresh with humour and genuine feelings of characters that u just can't help being touched to ur heart. The way Mike wanted Sam and cudn't have her because she was so insecure... just made me want to cry for him. Sexual tension was electric ! There was intriguing plot of sam's grandmother's story too... It surely kept me wondering that what happened on the night so long ago that her grandmother has to live her whole life in hiding... the climax was great! A well thoughtout suspense novel, no loose ends...just perfect romantic suspense! Just my kind of romance... Great Hero, Thrilling Sexual tension, Well Developed Plot, Heroine with a wicked sense of humour and last but not the least an endearing but interfering family... what else cud a romance fan ask for? Summary: great love story If only every woman in the world could meet up with a Michael Taggert. I once actually knew a real person by this name (now deceased), and although he didn't fit the description of DeVeraux's Michael Taggert, he was a handsome man and a fine human being. Unfortunately, unlike DeVeraux's fiction character,I don't think he was nearly as financially fixed or debonair as her Taggert. But then isn't the hero in most romantic novels supposed to be rich, handsome and debonair. Readers have come to expect it. Regardless, DeVeraux's talent shined through with Sweet Liar. I recently went into a used book shop and found several of this author's hardback books, which I purchased and brought home. Sweet Liar caught my attention first and I'm glad that it did. I really enjoyed the trying times of Samatha Elliot. And like all love stories are supposed to end, to no surprise this one ended happily. To romance readers and DeVeraux fans, this one is a keeper. Go for it. Summary: The New York Taggerts Sweet Liar is a good read and kept my interest throughout. Samantha Elliot definitely had a disfunctional and sad life that caused her to be emotionally impaired and depressed. Although her father caused a large share of her misery, he did do one thing right, and that was to send her to New York to meet her "landlord" Michael Taggart. Michael is a dream come true, one of the nicest (sweetest) heroes ever! I would have been happy with pages upon pages about Michael, but maybe that would have been too much of a good thing. Samantha should be thankful that Michael was patient toward her or she may have never had a chance to blossom into the spunky woman that she truly was. The underlying gangster story adds to the intrigue. The reinactment of the 1928 massacre toward the end of the book was a little "over the top", but the majority of the book is an entertaining read. Jude did a good job with this one! Summary: I do love those Taggerts Okay this book was great! I loved how Sam may have apeared as a dowdy maid. But in reality she was beautiful and fun loving. Now a lot of reviewrs didn't like her and thought she was flacky and wondered why Mike didn't leave well enough alone when she turned him down so ofton. Okay let me break it down for ya... Her husband lied to her, cheated her out of a good life, and most of all made it seem like she was bad in bed when in reality he was spending his days in another bed with another woman. And before this her mother dies and she thinks it's her fault. Am i missing anything? Hell yeah she put up a wall against Mike. she wouldn't know this perfect (hott lol) STRANGER is only looking out for her and really really does care for her. Is Sam supposed to be phycic? I think not! Than Mike...it's said he should have gave up on her. Well if he would have left her life she never would have changed. She would have stayed dethached from the splendid things life has to offer. And it's not his fault he has alot of money. This is one of her best love stories and i'll admit the gansta stuff got a little tired but it was one of the best. Get with the program it's a good book... im done venting...lol |
