Professional Review:
365 fun, creative activities to stimulate your toddler every day of the year.

This book contains 365 activities (one for each day of the year) for one-and-a-half to three-year-olds using things found around the home. It shows parents and day-care providers how to:

  • Prevent boredom during the longest stretches of indoor weather with ideas for indoor play, kitchen activities, and arts and crafts projects.

  • Stimulate a child's natural curiosity with entertaining math, language, and motor-skills activities.

  • Encourage a child's physical, mental, and emotional growth with ideas for fun music, food, water, and outdoor activities.

  • Keep toddlers occupied during long car trips or cross-town errands.

The Toddler's Busy Book is written with warmth and sprinkled with humor and insight. It should be required reading for anyone raising or teaching toddlers.

   Summary: Worth the $10.00 Investment
As some people have said in the 1-3 star reviews, many of the ideas in this book are no-brainers we could have come up with on our own. I cannot deny that fact, and yet I must say 'kudos!' to the authoress for writing the ideas down and earning an income for her brood as a result! That said, I loved the book. I checked it out at our library and my severe impulse to underline things and fold down pages caused me to realize that I must buy a copy. And as for being able to come up with the ideas on my own, I have three sons between the ages of 7 months and 4 years and simply don't have time to look around for creative ways to keep them all busy. Call me lazy, but I'd rather shell out $10 (or in my current state whip out my library card) and save time. The book is not only great for a quick pick me up for bored children (days and days of rain in the midwest, anyone?) it also has so many tidbits for ME, like gentle reminders that though stressful at times, being a mom is one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.

Summary: A wealth of ideas...that take preparation.
For the money, I thought this was a good book. It is not, however, a book full of "instant ideas." Many of them have to be prepared ahead of time. I think this book also assumes that you have a designated play area for your child, where paints and play-doh are okay to use. (And if you don't have an area like that yet, make one.) Still, there are tons of good ideas that will keep your child entertained. I've already used a couple of the rainy day activities with my 2-yr-old son and we've had fun. And many of the craft ideas, once they're set up or assembled, can be used many times or make permanent toys, which saves you from having to buy news ones all the time! All in all a good buy.

Summary: Fun book full of ideas
This book is chock full of inexpensive ideas for toddler entertainment, using mostly things that are already around the house. I can't wait to do them all!

Summary: An invaluable resource for parents of several children
When there's only one toddler in the house, these kinds of ideas are not as needed because the newness of discovering the world together takes on a life of its own. However, now that my current toddler is a little sister, my brain is divided amongst so much. I am keeping this book in my kitchen as a constant resource. A lot of the ideas are obvious ones in a sense but as for ME, I do not have the mental space to be this creative all the time.

From a penny-pincher's and/or environmentalist's perspective, she is a big help because she essentially instructs you to keep virtually every by-product of your essential purchases (food containers, toilet paper rolls, etc) for creative uses.

Lastly, from the philosophical standpoint of valuing home and "real-life" education, this is such a great start. Babies and toddlers learn everything by exploring their real world, and the ideas in this book keep them more attuned to their "real world" than the average toy. The ideas keep them busy figuring things out rather than being entertained.

   Summary: Wonderful resource
Well organized and very user-friendly, this is a fantastic resource for all. The "Kids in the Kitchen" section alone is worth the price of this affordable, invaluable book! The lists of household supplies to keep on hand and also craft supplies to purchase is very useful -- I love being prepared for most anything!
