 Written on August 8, 1999 Summary: A must have... This book is essential for I.T. personnel and should be considered mandatory reading for architects, and managers alike... Written on August 8, 1999 Summary: An excellent overview and map Funny how many people do not either read or understand the purpose of a book. UML Distilled was just what I was looking for, a short overview of UML for people who understand a bit about OO. It also has suggestions of other books for further study. Written on June 22, 1999 Summary: Good, but you need other books as well I finally got around to reading this book and it is a good book. But there is so much to UML and modeling that no one book can really do it all. Add to this the refreshingly different UML in color book by Peter Coad and you will be in much better shape. Written on May 24, 1999 Summary: Useful, but not for everyone This book is useful for what it really is: an introduction to the graphical language of UML. It does not really teach one much about modelling, or about methodologies for OOAD. So it poses a strange problem: it is a beginner's book, but unsuitable for total beginners. It is best read by people who already have an understanding of the OOAD process- others may end up rather confused. For those who are new to UML but not OO, it is a very useful introduction to the notation. I find myself constantly looking things up, and it is pretty complete. Reminds me of the "in a nutshell" books, but more readable. I like Fowler's style and if I were to complain, I would say that it needs some more down-to-earth techniques (e.g. how would you model a login, or a client-server with sockets, etc.) which would put the notation into a more useful context. Written on May 15, 1999 Summary: A must read book ... This book is a must read one for those starting to look for how to improve their code by analisys and design by using UML. It has a great introduction of OOA&D which is useful because it makes UML have a meaning. Indeed some of the details about UML are left out but, hey, isn't this 'top down' way a successful technique for designing ? My bottom line is : read this book and you won't he disappointed. At least, I am not, for sure... |
